Summary

Our Four Corners Power Plant has an immediate opening for a Substation Journeyman
. The work hours for this position are Monday - Friday 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM (NM Time).

• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Must qualify as a Substation Journeyman
• Completed a Registered Apprenticeship Program or an equivalent training program (as approved by APS T&D Technical & Safety Training) plus one year experience as a Substation Journeyman
• Commercial Driver’s License (Class “A”) with ability to meet all DOT requirements. Must have at least a Class A CDL permit at the time of application, and a clean driving record.
  • If applying with a CDL Permit, a valid Class A CDL license (with no mechanical restrictions such as airbrakes) must be obtained prior to the official transfer/start date.
  • If applying with an out‑of‑state CDL, a valid Arizona Class A CDL license (with no mechanical restrictions such as airbrakes) must be obtained within 30 days of the official transfer/start date.

• Considerable experience performing journeyman‑level high voltage substation duties with an electric utility or other entity operating and maintaining high voltage substation equipment.
• Experience in writing and executing switching orders, and basic computer skills such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• The ideal candidate must be self‑motivated, communicate well with others, and possess a positive attitude with the highest commitment to work safety.

• This position requires working with aerial equipment, which has weight restrictions of 300 lbs or less.
• Must live within a reasonable distance (one hour) from assigned Headquarters.
• Subject to overtime and/or out‑of‑town assignments.
• Qualifying tests (written and hands‑on) will be administered. Travel reimbursement may be available for out‑of‑state candidates.

Onsite: Requires work to be performed in the field and/or at an APS facility. Depending on the responsibilities of the role, this may include, but is not limited to, working at a power plant, job site, or in the community.

Must live or relocate within reasonable distance to the headquarters. Reasonable distance is defined as one hour for Metro and State Region locations. Reasonable distance for Trouble men, Local Representatives, and Substation Technicians is defined as thirty minutes for Metro locations and forty‑five minutes for State Region locations.

• For jobs in departments (System, Reliability, Hotstick) that require the majority of the work to be performed out‑of‑town and such that employees/crews are not required to report to the established headquarters unless directed by Leadership, the reasonable distance requirement will be waived. This will not apply to Trouble men, Local Representatives or Substation Technicians.

This position requires Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) access consistent with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards. Applicants must obtain and maintain CIP access for the duration of employment. A full seven‑year criminal history will be obtained through the pre‑employment background check process to fulfill the CIP access requirements. In addition, this position requires an additional background check every seven years to maintain access.
