Job SummaryControl Room Operator – Hobbs, New Mexico. As the Control Room Operator, you will report to the Operations Manager and be responsible for monitoring and operating power plant systems to support safe, reliable, and efficient facility operations. You will respond to alarms, support plant startup and shutdown activities, and collaborate with on‑site personnel to maintain operational continuity. The role may also assist with general plant operations and maintenance activities as assigned.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain a strong working knowledge of the Company Health & Safety Management System and relevant safe work practices (Permit to Work, Management of Change, Contractor Safety, etc.).
- Coach and mentor facility employees on safety behaviors, use of the Management System, and participation in Health & Safety activities.
- Verify job tasks are reviewed before initiating work and when changes occur in the work environment or task requirements.
- Communicate incidents and potential adverse events (Near Misses) to Plant leadership and Health & Safety support promptly.
- Lead a shift of operators in the safe and efficient operation of a 2 × 1 combined‑cycle power plant.
- Conduct shift meetings, resolve problems, and document issues in the CMMS.
- Perform plant startups, shutdowns, and respond to abnormal plant conditions.
- Maintain compliance with safety practices outlined in the Health & Safety Management System.
- Support plant maintenance activities by providing lock‑out/tag‑out support, equipment identification, troubleshooting, and preparation of work requests.
- Participate in administrative maintenance of plant operating manuals, technical references, preventive and predictive maintenance records.
- Identify and implement improvement initiatives that enhance safety, reliability, productivity, and client service.
- High school diploma or equivalent (four years of high school education) required.
- Associate Degree in a technical field desirable.
- Experience as a Control Room Operator or equivalent role at a generating plant required.
- Experience with water chemistry control, water treatment, or chemical‑handling requirements desired.
- Knowledge of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed‑system generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management, and plant parameter recording highly desirable.
- Experience using SAP or other CMMS desired.
- Direct operation experience of a combined‑cycle large‑frame gas turbine power plant preferred.
- Familiarity with piping and instrument schematics and process controls desirable.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
- Physical requirements:
standing, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting 50 pounds. - Work twelve‑hour rotating shifts, with possible overtime, weekend, and holiday work as required by schedules and plant conditions.
