New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) provides a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public while promoting economic development and preserving New Mexico's environment.
Why does the job exist?Position will perform independent field inspections, performs highway construction, project documentation, assure quality of material and conduct field sampling and testing as needed throughout District Four. Position will perform office work as needed.
How does it get done?Conducts field inspections as well as sampling and/or testing to assure quality of material in accordance with American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials standards and specifications and document all project activities. Maintain accurate, updated documents for Department procedures and project compliance.
Who are the customers?The traveling public.
Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate will possess the following:
- Road construction or road maintenance experience.
- Ability to read and understand plans, specifications and contract documents.
- Ability to thoroughly document daily activities.
- Ability to perform basic math skills, including but not limited to performing volume and area calculations.
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of MS Office.
High School Diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment RequirementsMust possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results. Business reference check and driver's license verification are required and employment is conditional pending results. May require Technician Training Certification Program (TTCP) certificates within one year of hire to include but not limited to:
Nuclear Densometer, Concrete Field and Lab Testing, Aggregate, Soils, Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Traffic Control and SWPPP.
Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. May include exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals; high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises, confined spaces; falls and bruises, considerable physical strain;
standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances; hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers.
May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call outs for emergencies. Willingness to accept change of geographical assignments. Interaction with the public by phone and in person. Frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays to include weekends, holidays, and overtime are required.
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to.
