Position: ENGINEERING INTERN (SEASONAL)
Assists with performing routine and varied technical engineering related work for environmental, water, drainage, traffic, sewer, street and other public works projects and programs. Assists an Engineer in application of principles, methods and techniques of Civil engineering technology.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

* Regular attendance is required to perform the duties of this position.

* Assists in supplemental surveys under the direction of a registered engineer.

* Assists in researching records, maps and other data to obtain typical engineering data such as the location of public and private utilities, property and structure information.

* Drafts preliminary dimensional drawings such as those needed for street, water, sewer, drainage, and other utility plans, systems and projects.

* Calculates dimensions, profile specifications, and quantities of materials such as pipe, concrete, and asphalt.

* Assists in the field collection of GIS data with survey grade GNSS equipment and with GIS data entry for water, sewer, electrical, communication, addressing, streets, subdivisions, buildings, signs, and various other City GIS features.

* Assists with the performance of a variety of office related functions, including preparing correspondence, maps, presentation materials, brochures, reducing field notes, printing materials, answering phones, scanning documents, filing documents, and responding to inquiries from contractors, developers, property owners, staff, and the general public.

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent or currently enrolled in high school.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Entry-level knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices and methods as applicable to a municipal setting; entry-level knowledge of applicable City policies, laws, and regulations affecting division activities.

Entry-level skill in drafting; entry-level skill in operating the listed tools and equipment.

Ability to prepare, organize and maintain engineering field and office data, reports and systems; ability to perform manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to work safely; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Total Station, GNSS survey equipment, auto-level, direct surveying rod, Philadelphia surveying rod, personal computer, including word processing, spreadsheet, data base, traffic count, and computer-aided-design software; standard drafting tools; picks, shovels, axes, and machetes; pipe locator; engineering calculator; motor vehicle; phone; mobile radio.

LICENSING AND CERTIFICATIONS

Valid State issued Driver's License

Work under the general supervision of the City Engineer, or designee.

Work is performed roughly equally in office settings and in the field as required in the surveying of various construction sites or rating of public works facilities. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate drafting instruments, computers and various pieces of office and surveying tools.
