- due to the available budget allocated for this position, the hiring rate will not exceed $33.32 per hour.
the purpose of this position is the supervision of high‑risk offenders who are sentenced by the court and/or parole board. This senior officer position focuses on high‑risk, violent offenders, gang members, and other specialized cases, utilizing community supervision per the directives and policies of the new mexico corrections department.
how does it get done?the officer will supervise high‑risk, high‑needs, high‑profile, and specialized‑circumstance offenders following sentencing by judicial authorities and/or parole board, often using the community supervision model.
who are the customers?high‑risk/high‑needs offenders placed on probation and/or parole supervision by the court and/or parole board.
ideal candidate- experience with global positioning satellite (gps) offender electronic monitoring systems.
- proficiency in motivational interviewing techniques specific to the adult felony population.
- ability to utilize assessment tools for supervision of adult felony offenders.
associate degree from an accredited college or university in sociology, psychology, criminal justice, or a related field, plus two (2) years of experience as a probation and parole officer, commissioned or non‑commissioned law enforcement officer, or equivalent behavioral case management experience. A combination of education and experience totaling four (4) years, or two (2) years as an adult correctional officer, or two (2) years in behavioral case management, or two (2) years of probation and parole office management or administration, will substitute for the required education.

this position is designated as safety sensitive and requires pre‑employment and random testing in accordance with federal and state law. Successful completion of the following courses within the first year of hire is required:
- defensive tactics and restraint courses, including exposure to mace/oc spray.
- first aid and cpr courses.
must possess and maintain a valid new mexico driver’s license, be a u.s. Citizen, 18 years old or older, and have no felony convictions. Must have a home phone, be willing to accept travel or geographic assignment changes, and may be required to carry a firearm, work odd hours, and visit offenders’ homes. Employment is conditional on background investigation and drug testing results.
statutory requirements:
- be a u.s. Citizen at the time of appointment.
- be at least the age of majority at the time of appointment.
- have good moral character and no felony or crime of moral turpitude convictions.
- pass a drug test as a condition of employment and ongoing random drug testing.
- complete the new mexico department of corrections basic probation and parole officer certification training within twelve months of hire and undergo annual recertification.
- maintain skills in self‑defense, handcuffing, baton use, chemical agents, and annual recertification.
work is performed in an adult prison environment and a field setting that includes daily contact with and supervision of adult offenders and/or inmates. Work may require odd hours, overtime, holidays, and weekends.
