Job Summary

Maintains order, enforces laws and ordinances, and protects life and property. Performs a combination of the following duties: patrol a specific area on foot or in a vehicle; direct traffic; issue traffic summons; investigate accidents; apprehend and arrest suspects, or serve legal processes of courts. This position is a multifaceted role that requires a combination of law enforcement expertise, communication skills, problem‑solving abilities, and a commitment to public service.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Regularly patrolling assigned areas, on foot, by vehicle, or other approved methods, to deter crime, observe suspicious activities, maintain order and safety, and enforce traffic and parking regulations.
  • Answering emergency and non‑emergency calls for service, including alarm calls, domestic disturbances, traffic accidents, and animal control issues.
  • Familiarizes oneself with a beat and with persons living in area.
  • Identifying potential risks: recognizing early signs of issues like gang activity or drug operations.
  • Investigates illegal or suspicious activities, persons, and establishments, and quells disturbances.
  • Locates, searches, identifies and apprehends individuals suspected of committing crimes, obtaining and serving warrants, and processing arrested persons while following police department policies and procedures.
  • Investigates reported crimes, accidents, and violations, which includes collecting and preserving evidence, interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects, conducting searches, and taking statements.
  • Performs first aid and provides other assistance to accident and other victims.
  • Conducts traffic stops, enforcing traffic laws, investigating accidents, issuing citations, and directing traffic during emergencies, parades, or other events.
  • Inspects public establishments requiring licenses to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Operates police communication and computer equipment to obtain, disseminate, and report information.
  • Builds relationships with the community, while participating in crime prevention and intervention initiatives, and providing information and assistance to citizens.
  • Writes detailed incident, investigation, activity, and other reports.
  • Develops and maintains positive community relationships.
  • Testifies in court to present evidence by describing conditions, situations, and actions.
  • Provides training and assistance to less experienced staff.
  • Officers may be assigned to specialized units such as detective work, narcotics, traffic, school liaison, or special weapons and tactics (SWAT).
  • Other duties as assigned.
