Overview

We are seeking a highly qualified paraprofessional / teacher aide to provide classroom support in the Hoboken Public Schools Department of Special Services. The role involves assisting teachers, managing classroom behavior, and helping students with academic, behavioral, and personal needs.

Responsibilities
  • Support Instruction:
    Assist the teacher in delivering instructional activities and implementing lesson plans. Provide individualized or small group support to students to reinforce learning and ensure understanding.
  • Classroom Management:
    Help manage classroom behavior and maintain a positive, orderly learning environment. Implement behavioral strategies and support students in following classroom rules.
  • Student Assistance:
    Support students with various needs, including academic, behavioral, and emotional. Offer help with assignments, projects, and daily tasks to facilitate their learning and participation.
  • Assessment and Monitoring:
    Observe and record student progress and behavior. Provide feedback to the teacher regarding student performance, challenges, and areas for improvement.
  • Personal Care:
    Assist students with personal care tasks as needed, such as mobility, hygiene, toileting/diapering, and feeding, while promoting independence and dignity. Lifting or carrying a small child up to 40 lbs.
  • Resource Preparation:
    Prepare and organize instructional materials and resources for classroom activities. Ensure materials are ready and accessible for students and teachers.
  • Facilitate Communication:
    Act as a liaison between students, teachers, and parents. Communicate effectively with all stakeholders to provide updates on student progress and address any concerns.
  • Behavioral Support:
    Implement and support individual behavior plans and strategies. Provide guidance and assistance to help students manage their behavior and achieve positive outcomes.
  • Support Learning

    Activities:

    Assist with the setup and supervision of classroom and extracurricular activities. Support students during group work, hands‑on activities, and special projects.
  • Data Entry and Record Keeping:
    Maintain accurate records of student performance, attendance, and any incidents or observations. Ensure that documentation is kept up-to‑date and organized.
  • Collaboration:
    Work collaboratively with teachers, specialists, and other school staff to support the educational and developmental needs of students. Participate in team meetings and contribute to the development of student support plans.
  • Professional Development:
    Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge related to supporting students and classroom management.
  • Safety and Supervision:
    Monitor students during transitions, recess, and other non‑instructional times to ensure their safety and well‑being. Address any safety concerns and report incidents as required.
  • Adaptability:
    Be flexible and adaptable to meet the changing needs of students and the classroom environment. Adjust support strategies as needed to best assist students.
  • Attendance:
    In‑person attendance is required to perform all essential functions listed above.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Implement directions, plans, and schedules as directed by the classroom teacher
  • In preschool classrooms, support the Tools of the Mind Curriculum
  • Lead small group activities
  • Apply strategies, accommodations, and modifications for students
  • Participate in classroom routines
  • Supervise students' practice of skills
  • Assist with room arrangement, activity centers, and field trips
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality
  • Supervise students in the hallways and during gross motor activities
  • Maintain files and records as directed by the teacher

Requirements & Qualifications
  • Preferred:
    Completion of two years (60 credits) of study at an accredited institution of higher learning or Associate’s Degree (or higher)
  • Required:

    HS Diploma or Equivalent
  • Criminal history background check
  • Proof of US citizenship or resident alien status
  • 30 days notice for resignation
Compensation

Per HSEA contract and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
