Job Description

Reports to:

Building Principal

Job Goal: Provide special education students with appropriate learning activities and assignments designed to address intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth within the context of a self‑contained program. Develop and modify curricula and prepare lessons and instructional materials according to ability levels and in alignment with Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Develop inclusion opportunities for students.

Certification Requirement: Severe Disabilities certification and Moderate Disabilities certification preferred.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain an effective classroom learning environment.
  • Set and maintain standards of behavior appropriate to class.
  • Oversee all classroom and related activities to ensure the health, safety, and general well‑being of all participants.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of state and federal regulations for special education.
  • Develop Individualized Educational Plans for students within one’s caseload.
  • Consistently prepare for class and demonstrate written evidence of preparation including lesson plans coordinated with the students’ I.E.P. objectives.
  • Instruct assigned class in the location and at the times designated.
  • Take suitable precautions to protect and maintain equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain data‑based records and anecdotal records on each student’s progress as required.
  • Be responsible for monitoring and initiating revisions of I.E.P.’s to ensure the relevance of activities to each child’s current needs, and to ensure his/her full educational benefit.
  • Meet with parents regularly outside the instructional day to discuss education‑related issues.
  • Supervise and train paraprofessionals and other staff to provide the maximum utilization of their time and skill. Provide clear and concise direction, instruction, and evaluation to all classroom staff.
  • Observe the Holbrook Public Schools standards of professional conduct in all instructional goals and activities, including the protection of the students and exact observation of emergency procedures.
  • Attend and participate as requested in school meetings.
  • Provide additional assistance to the Principal, Director of Pupil Personnel Services, and their designees as directed.
  • Coordinate with specialists (PT, OT, Speech, BCBA) to facilitate therapeutic strategies across all content areas.
  • Write progress reports.
  • Participate in the evaluations of children placed in the program.
  • Schedule and participate in team meetings.
  • Implement MCAS alternate assessment as indicated by the students’ IEPs.

Evaluation: Performance on the job will be evaluated periodically, in accordance with the criteria listed above as performance responsibilities and with the provisions of Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) policy on evaluation of Professional Personnel.
