Special Education Teacher

Location: Dawson Elementary School, Holden, Massachusetts

Starting Date: Immediately

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Education or related field;
    Master’s preferred.
  • Certification: Valid Massachusetts Teaching License for the applicable grade level and subject area; SEI endorsement required.
  • Experience: Previous teaching experience preferred.
  • Skills: Effective communication and collaboration with students, families, and colleagues; design and implement standards‑based lesson plans; tailor teaching strategies for diverse learners including ELLs, students with disabilities, and advanced learners; understand and support social, emotional, and academic challenges of students.
Job Responsibilities
  • Individualized Education Plans: Develop and implement IEPs in compliance with Massachusetts DESE regulations. Participate in IEP meetings, eligibility meetings, and team meetings as needed.
  • Instruction: Plan, organize, and deliver effective lessons aligned with state standards and curriculum. Adapt lessons for individual student needs and learning styles. Use research‑based practices to meet the needs of all learners while implementing IEPs.
  • Student Support: Participate in MTSS framework: monitor progress, identify academic or behavioral challenges, provide appropriate interventions. Availability for extra help outside regular hours if needed.
  • Assessment: Monitor student performance through formative and summative assessments, assignments, observations, and other tools. Maintain timely and accurate documentation, including progress reports and data collection. Provide feedback to students and parents.
  • Classroom Management: Establish a safe, inclusive, respectful environment that fosters engagement and academic/behavioral success.
  • Collaboration: Work with colleagues, administrators, and support staff in Professional Learning Communities to improve instruction using quality materials and research‑based strategies. Participate in committees, professional development, and faculty meetings. Collaborate with general education teachers for inclusion and co‑teaching models when necessary.
  • Parent and Community Engagement: Communicate effectively with parents/guardians about progress, behavior, and concerns. Participate in conferences and school events.
  • Professional Learning: Pursue professional development to implement innovative practices, integrate emerging technologies, and align with evolving state education policies.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in a classroom setting and adapt to a dynamic school environment.
  • Occasional lifting of instructional materials and moving throughout the building.
Additional Requirements
  • Successful completion of background checks required by state law and school policies.
