Qualifications:
  • Valid and appropriate teaching certificate/license from the State of Ohio is required.
  • Recent experience teaching English Language Learners preferred
  • Record of good attendance and strong work ethic.
  • Evidence of good moral character as established in section  of the Ohio Administrative Code.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of how students learn and of the developmental characteristics of age groups.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of assessment types, their purposes and the data they generate.
  • Knowledge of research-based instructional models designed to make grade-level academic content accessible to multi-lingual learners.
  • Proven ability to deliver evidence-based interventions at a high level.
  • Willingness to meet the needs of all students.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, administrators, and colleagues.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to use technology for data collection.
  • Willingness to participate in future training.
  • Willingness to follow assigned work schedule.

  • General Description:

    Under the direction of the Principal and Director of Federal Programs, this position provides equitable access to high-quality education by ensuring that the core curriculum and general education experience are both accessible and meaningful for all English Learners. This role requires the ability to support students and collaborate with staff through various modes of differentiated language instruction. The EL Specialist plays a critical role in screening, instruction, and transitioning services for English Learners.

    Essential Functions:
  • Identifies English Learners using state criteria.
  • Demonstrates strong and current knowledge of ESL methodologies and best practices for teaching English learners in grades K-12.
  • Coach and/or guide colleagues in analysis of the academic language demands in relation to ELs proficiency levels.
  • Coach and/or guide colleagues in designing lessons and/or units that meet ELs' needs.
  • Coach and/or guide colleagues in crafting rubrics and performance-based assessments or making necessary modifications to already available assessments to meet ELs' needs and to provide more valid and reliable data for decision-making.
  • Provide teachers, instructional support team members, and building principals with information about language acquisition and linguistically and culturally responsive teaching in general and with students’ English language proficiency levels in particular.
  • Screens newly arrived non-English speaking and English learning students, analyzes assessment data, creates a service delivery program, and informs parents of placement within the ELL program.
  • Assists in the development, facilitation, and delivery of professional learning activities for teachers.
  • Monitors, reports, and communicates student progress and performance in regard to ELL programming.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of student growth and progress.
  • Communicates clear learning goals and success criteria that explicitly links learning activities to those defined goals
  • Applies knowledge of how students think and learn to instructional design and delivery.
  • Collaborates with others to create a whole school atmosphere where diversity is welcomed and valued.
  • Accesses and responds to electronic communication (i.e., website, email, voice mail,etc.) daily
  • Develop a working knowledge of existing district core instructional programs and resources.
  • Understands, upholds and follows professional ethics, policies and legal codes of professional conduct.
  • Attend staff meetings, grade level meetings, and program meetings as may be requested or as established by district policy.
  • Lead the development and hosting of community-facing EL events that promote cultural inclusivity, provide families with actionable strategies to support learning at home, and strengthen community-school partnerships.
