The Behavior Support Specialist reports directly to the building Principal. The position is responsible for supporting students with social-emotional and behavior supports, so that they can access the curriculum.

Assists with managing the building, especially in the absence of the building administrator(s). Implements and supports the Positive Behavioral Intervention System of Supports. In conjunction with building Principal, works to implement effective techniques and strategies to prevent and respond to disruptive student behavior in collaboration with the Offices of Pupil Services and School Improvement. Develops positive home-school relations and encourages parent involvement within the school.

Participates in the Building Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) team. Interacts with co-workers, administration, students and parents in cooperative, supportive and positive ways. Participates in disciplinary investigations and representation at district level hearings as assigned. Works with students and families who struggle with regular school attendance. Attends professional staff development as designated. Maintains regular, consistent, and timely attendance. Uses Restorative Practices with fidelity.

If not already trained in Restorative Practices, it is required to become trained in Restorative Practices. Uses Therapeutic Crisis Intervention for Schools (TCIS) with fidelity. If not already trained in TCIS, it is required to become trained in TCIS. Other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal or other administrator.

At least two years of experience working in a public school setting. Bachelor's degree of education or educational administration, Masters Degree preferred or in process. Valid teacher or administrative certification and highly qualified status according to the Michigan Department of Education. Evidence of very successful experience in a school setting or youth services setting required. Success as a classroom teacher. Ability to work well with students, staff and parents.

Experience working in ethnically diverse communities and/or with at-risk youth preferred. Ability to demonstrate mature judgment and moral and ethical behavior. Ability to project a positive outlook, manner and appearance. Ability to create and maintain all records required in a timely and completely accurate manner. Demonstrates the physical, mental, emotional and psychological capacity for the demands of the assignment.
