Overview

The Sports Complex Maintenance Assistant will work under the general direction of the Recreation Maintenance Leader. On a daily basis, team members will perform a variety of maintenance activities for the City of Holland.

Responsibilities
  • Mow Public Spaces:
    Responsible for a mowing route as determined by Parks & Recreation Leadership.
  • Edge and Trim:
    Edge sidewalks and pathways to maintain clean and neat borders.
  • Trash and Debris Removal:
    Pick up trash and debris to keep public areas clean.
  • Landscaping Maintenance:
    Paint, repair, or build landscape elements and buildings as needed.
  • Trim and Prune:
    Trim shrubs, hedges, and perennials to ensure proper growth and appearance.
  • Field Preparation:
    Line fields for sports leagues and prepare infields for softball/baseball games.
  • Planting and Weeding:
    Prepare, plant, weed, and maintain perennial and annual flower beds.
  • Seasonal Clean-Up:
    Assist in seasonal tasks such as leaf removal and general clean-up efforts.
  • Graffiti Removal:
    Assist in removing graffiti from public areas and park facilities.
  • Facility Maintenance:
    Help clean and maintain park facilities to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.
  • Event Support:
    Set up and assist with City and Park events as needed.
  • Other Duties as Assigned:
    Perform additional tasks as directed by supervisors, such as assisting with repairs, special projects, or other recreation needs.
Qualifications
  • Experience in Landscaping or Grounds Maintenance:
    Previous experience in mowing, trimming, or general groundskeeping preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to Operate Mowers and Landscaping Equipment:
    Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, how to operate and maintain mowers, trimmers, and other landscaping tools effectively and safely.
  • Valid Driver’s License:
    Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record, with the ability to safely operate trucks and trailers for transporting equipment.
  • Physical Stamina and Strength:
    Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, such as mowing, lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods in various weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of Safety Practices:
    Understanding safety guidelines and procedures, or the ability to learn, related to machinery operation, driving, and groundskeeping to prevent accidents or injuries.
  • Attention to Detail:
    Strong attention to detail when performing landscaping tasks to ensure neat, professional results.
  • Teamwork and Communication:
    Ability to work well with others in a team environment, following directions, and communicating effectively with crew members and supervisors.
  • Adaptability:
    Ability to adapt to changing work conditions, weather, and schedules, including seasonal adjustments in responsibilities.

    Skills:

    Basic interpersonal skills for interacting with the public and addressing inquiries or concerns in a polite and professional manner.
  • Punctuality and Reliability:
    Demonstrated reliability and punctuality, adhering to work schedules and completing assigned tasks in a timely manner.
Working Conditions
  • Outdoor Work Environment:
    Work is performed primarily outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Physical Demands:
    The role requires physical labor, including lifting heavy objects (up to 50 pounds), standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and repetitive motion for extended periods.
  • Exposure to Natural Elements:
    Workers are exposed to direct sunlight, dust, pollen, insects, and potentially hazardous plants (e.g., poison ivy or thorn bushes).
  • Noise Levels:
    Mowing equipment and machinery generate high noise levels, requiring the use of hearing protection when operating certain equipment.
