Senior Manufacturing Systems Engineer:
Automation – DeltaV Live

We’re building Amgen’s newest drug-substance manufacturing plant, the FleX batch facility, which integrates disposable technologies with traditional stainless steel equipment to maximize flexibility, sustainability, and digital automation. The facility will use industry 4.0 capabilities to reduce carbon and waste as part of Amgen’s carbon‑neutral plan by 2027.

The schedule for this position is 4 days × 10‑hour shift:
Wednesday through Saturday.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain the Emerson DeltaV distributed control system (DCS) for process control.
  • Work with SMEs to translate process requirements into automated solutions.
  • Collaborate with business partners to improve workflow and productivity through automation.
  • Synthesize client, customer, or end‑user requirements and develop optimal automation solutions.
  • Provide clear documentation for delivered solutions and support QA partners during computerized systems validation in a GxP environment.
  • Maintain data‑integrity assessments in line with current Amgen and industry standards.
  • Build business processes to support the project scope and align with timelines.
  • Develop detailed specifications, engineering policies, and procedures affecting multiple organizational units.
  • Support commissioning and qualification efforts, including Automation Installation Verification/Automation Check‑Out (IV/ACO).
  • Own and drive change controls, CAPAs, and deviations.
  • Lead and support functional area projects focused on improving process equipment, utilities, and facilities as well as large/sophisticated capital projects.
  • Lead and support technical root‑cause analysis, incident investigations, and troubleshooting of process control issues.
  • Lead and support new product introductions (NPI) or new technology introductions by performing automation engineering assessments and configuration changes.
  • Manage day‑to‑day operational support: 24×7 onsite/on‑call support, troubleshooting, preventive and corrective maintenance, system administration, and spare‑parts management.
  • Prepare and review SOPs and cGMP documents.
  • Continuously seek new and innovative ways to improve processes, safety, reliability, and productivity.
Basic Qualifications
  • High School Diploma / GED and 10 years of engineering experience.
  • Associate’s Degree and 8 years of engineering experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree and 4 years of engineering experience.
  • Master’s Degree and 2 years of engineering experience.
  • Doctorate Degree (preferred).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Biotech Engineering, or a related field.
  • Direct knowledge of automation system design and troubleshooting within GMP biopharmaceutical production facilities.
  • Extensive programming, design, installation, and lifecycle management experience in manufacturing process controls, automation, and field instrumentation.
  • Experience with Emerson DeltaV DCS, process‑control network design (network segregation, virtual infrastructure, OPC, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus, Device Net).
  • Experience with DeltaV Live (preferred).
  • Ability to interpret and apply GAMPs, GMPs, 21 CFR Part 11, ASTM 2500, S88, and S95.
  • Capital project lifecycle experience: conceptual design, scope & cost estimation, business case development, detailed design, engineering & validation documentation, and project execution.
  • Track record of developing process‑control strategies for new product introduction or new technology deployment.
  • Demonstrated continuous improvement experience improving safety, reliability, and productivity.
  • Strong leadership, technical writing, and communication/presentation skills.
