Amgen is building a new advanced drug substance manufacturing plant that will combine disposable technologies with traditional stainless‑steel equipment, integrating sustainability innovations to reduce carbon and waste as part of our plan to be a carbon‑neutral company by 2027.
Utilities Manager – HVAC / Electrical What You Will Do- Lead Amgen NCF&E utility staff supporting utility operations, including HVAC and electrical systems at the site.
- Maintain continuous and compliant utility operations in safety, quality, and regulatory dimensions.
- Manage a robust utility maintenance program of preventive, predictive, and corrective activities to maximize safety, reliability, OEE, and product quality.
- Develop and execute maintenance strategies for utility systems, covering startup, commissioning, qualification, operation, preventive/predictive/corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, and vendor oversight.
- Lead HVAC and environmental control systems—including air handling, exhaust fans, biosafety cabinets, HEPA filtration, walk‑in cold rooms, freezers, refrigeration/DX systems, environmental chambers, steam, chilled water, cooling tower water, and heating hot water systems.
- Lead electrical systems—including switch gear, MCCs, panel boards, lighting, UPSs, solar inverters, emergency generators, motor starters, VFDs, low‑voltage circuits—and related inspection, testing, troubleshooting, repair, and documentation.
- Ensure maintenance program documentation is created, implemented, and maintained (SOPs, CCMS, NCs, WOs, JPs, HRAs, JHAs).
- Partner with Capital Project Delivery, Site Operations, Engineering, Quality, EHS, Manufacturing, vendors, and service providers to support construction, startup, commissioning, and ongoing reliability.
- Ensure staff training and GMP compliance.
- Maximize staff productivity and efficient resource use across facilities.
- Analyze engineering, construction, and maintenance cost forecasts against scope.
- Oversight of complex facilities/utilities/maintenance initiatives and projects, including capital project execution.
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with Engineering, EHS, Quality, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing.
- Improve plant capability and equipment reliability with engineering leadership and technical staff.
- Identify improvement opportunities, conduct analyses, recommend solutions, sponsor projects, and lead or support implementation.
- Maintain and develop key performance indicators for maintenance performance; lead, assess, develop staff; meet all targets and milestones on time and on budget.
- Support network‑wide improvement in plant maintenance and operation.
- Provide leadership and guidance to resources to accomplish activities and objectives.
- Build a culture that cultivates and rewards creativity and innovation.
- Doctorate degree
- OR Masters degree with 2 years of manufacturing equipment maintenance experience
- OR Bachelor's degree with 4 years of manufacturing equipment maintenance experience
- OR Associate's degree with 8 years of manufacturing equipment maintenance experience
- OR High school diploma / GED with 10 years of manufacturing equipment maintenance experience
- In addition to the above, experience directly managing people or leading teams, projects, programs, or allocating resources is required.
- 4+ years in engineering or utility operations within biotechnology and/or pharmaceutical or other regulated environments, or military experience
- 3+ years ensuring compliance in a highly regulated environment
- Demonstrated interpersonal and facilitation skills and ability to work in a collaborative team environment
- Analytical skills to evaluate complex problems using multiple sources
- Ability to lead multiple tasks and set priorities effectively
- Proven skill in goal setting and driving continuous improvement through monitoring key metrics
- Extensive knowledge of electro‑mechanical, fluid, and gas equipment and systems
- Experience leading or supporting HVAC and/or electrical maintenance teams in manufacturing, utility operations, construction/startup, or regulated environments
