SummaryPerforms general security work in the protection of persons and property. Provides support with enforcement of UNC Health security and safety regulations. Prepares reports and maintains proficiency in the department’s current report writing system. Gathers information, including video monitoring. Serves in specialized unit assignments and assists the organization to ensure adherence of applicable federal, state and local laws.
Responsibilities- Communications:
Communicates effectively via two‑way radio, computer, email, telephone and verbal communications within the Hospital Police Department, as well as with other law enforcement agencies, hospital staff, visitors and patients. - Emergency Response:
Assist with mental health patient custody issues and arrange transportation to other facilities or escort patients to inpatient units. Responds to patient, visitor or employee behavior issues, smoke, trouble or fire alarms, and acts as backup for Hospital police officers. Participates in the Emergency Response Team to control access during emergency situations. Maintains knowledge of emergency codes and procedures, and responds promptly to all emergencies and security alarms. - Fixed Post Functions:
In the Emergency Department, controls patient and visitor entry and operates metal screening to prevent contraband. Maintains parking lot surveillance and ensures parking availability for ED customers. At night, controls entrance of visitors and employees, screens for proper authorization, and staffs other posts as needed. - Investigations and Incident Report Writing:
Complete trespass, patient intervention and use‑of‑force reports with a full narrative, take custody of items, secure them, and attempt property return. Initiates risk assessments on DOC inmates, patients and employees as required. - Patrol:
Submits daily activity logs/reports before shift end unless approved otherwise. Knows security‐sensitive areas per the Security Management plan and patrol policy. Escorts employees, patients and visitors to parking areas; provides after‑hours access to secured areas for authorized personnel. Collects inventories and secures patient property when cashier’s office is closed. Patrols assigned area, documents/report hazards, locks/unlocks doors, handles deceased bodies and releases them with proper , transports patient commitment documents to the Magistrates’ office, challenges suspicious persons, completes required patrols, and redirects violations of the UNC Health Care Tobacco‑Free Workplace policy. - Traffic Control:
Conducts parking surveys, enforces parking regulations, initiates towing as required, reports malfunctioning citation equipment for repair, patrols responsibilities and writes citations for illegally parked or unauthorized vehicles proactively.
- Education Requirements: High School diploma or GED.
- Licensure/Certification Requirements: Valid North Carolina Driver’s license; CPR certification before 12 months of employment.
- Professional Experience Requirements: One year of previous work experience.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Requirements: Proficient oral and written communication; basic computer skills.
