Starting Pay For Position Is Within $28.19 - $31.50 Per Hour Dependent On Qualifications

Job Summary

This is entry level professional work involving a wide range of assignments that requires a sound knowledge of urban planning and zoning processes. Work involves the participation as an individual or as a team member on a wide variety of planning processes requiring general knowledge of urban planning and zoning techniques and the ability to conceptualize and prepare planning reports. Supervision is received through professional and administrative superiors.

Job Functions and Responsibilities
  • Collects, compiles, tabulates and analyzes data and factual materials fundamental to a comprehensive planning and zoning program.
  • Disseminates information to the public on planning, zoning and development regulations; makes interpretative decisions regarding zoning and development regulations.
  • Responds to email, telephone, or in-person inquiries; greets the general public, and development industry; disseminates information on planning, zoning and development regulations; and provides information on departmental services and functions.
  • Reviews and approves zoning applications; paint permits; alcoholic beverage permits, Certificates of Use, and similar applications based on the City's Zoning and Land Development Regulations.
  • Creates and process zoning verification letters.
  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of Board reports for the Planning and Development and the Historic Preservation Boards.
  • Reviews site and permit plans for compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • Participates in the preparation of zoning and planning reports as requested.
  • Aids in the preparation and coordination of various elements of the Development Review Process.
  • Performs field inspections as necessary.
  • Must effectively and positively represent the City in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation.
  • Must maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors and managers.
  • Performs related work as required for this position description only.

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Planning, Public Administration, Social Sciences, Architecture, Landscaping Architecture, Urban Design, or closely related field.

Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Knowledge of generally accepted principles and practices of urban planning and zoning.
  • Knowledge of modern research techniques and statistical methods.
  • Knowledge of the applicability of local and regional zoning laws and regulations.
  • Ability to understand, interpret and explain land use laws and regulations.
  • Ability to complete projects within assigned time periods.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, graphically, orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of software packages such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Suites, GIS, and the techniques of preparing maps and charts.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships colleagues, supervisors, managers, administrators, and the general public.
