Overview

Breakwater Reinsurance Holdings, Inc (“Breakwater”), a subsidiary of Valence Insurance Holdings, LLC,is seeking a Controller to join the Corporate Accounting team. This role is responsible for providing comprehensive support across corporate accounting, audit, financial planning and analysis, and project management functions across the multiple entities in the Breakwater group ofcaptive reinsurance companies. The ideal candidate will play a crucial role in monthly accounting and financial reporting, designing and testing internal controls, and upholding the organization’s accounting principles and practices.

There will be a focus on creating automation within the project management responsibilities to foster quicker monthly closes, better interim reporting, and providing management with best estimates prior to publishing monthly/quarterly financial statements. This position interacts with all levels of executive management throughout the Company ecosystem.

What you’ll be doing
  • Manage month-end GAAP financial close process, including review of journal entries and key account reconciliations and support work papers for captive reinsurers.
  • Perform account and variance analysis with explanations and drivers of variance
  • Support the preparation of financial statements and exhibits and help ensure timely completion of financial statements and other required or requested deliverables across the organization
  • Work closely with FP&A to develop the company projections and build out the reporting package.
  • Manage a team of accountants and their career development
  • Evaluate and implement internal control procedures and documentation to ensure/enhance control design and operational effectiveness
  • Provide solutions and implement automation across the financial reporting functions to deliver timely results and polished deliverables consistently
  • Assist with calculating collateral requirements and reconciling back to cedants’ collateral calculations
  • Manage relationships with external consultants such as auditors, tax preparation CPAs, and other professional services engaged by the Company
  • Oversee and assist accounting team in preparing schedules for the external annual audit and interim agreed upon procedures
  • Contribute recommendations to management to help impact long term strategic objectives as well as daily decisions
  • Document and maintain accounting policies and process workflows
We’re looking for someone who has
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • Minimum 8-12 years of experience in financial reporting and accounting field (CPA preferred)
  • Thorough understanding of Statutory accounting principles and policies
  • Thorough understanding of GAAP accounting principles, policies, and controls
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite with an emphasis in Excel and PowerPoint skills required
  • Ability to work under strict deadlines, both independently and in a team environment
  • Attention to detail and the ability to complete tasks with a high degree of accuracy
  • Strong verbal and written skills, and the ability to convey complex information
  • Available to work across time zones
