Position: EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - EMT

Overview

Emergency Medical Technician - EMT at JFK University Medical Center, Holmdel, New Jersey. The EMT provides Basic Life Support (BLS) services for emergency and non-emergency requests, ensures safe and prompt transportation, and may work in hazardous conditions while wearing appropriate PPE.

Requires critical thinking to assess, triage, communicate, treat and transport patients of all ages in various settings, and integration with all emergency agencies and healthcare providers. Patient care reports must be completed for each patient, and all actions must comply with New Jersey regulations (N.J.A.C. 8:40) and HMH policies and procedures.

Join a team that serves Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, and Union Counties. A $4000 sign-on bonus is offered to qualified full-time night shift EMTs new to JFK EMS. Must start by May 13, 2026.

Responsibilities
  • Responds to calls in a timely manner.
  • Assists and supports all public safety personnel and other healthcare providers when rendering patient care.
  • Assesses the patient and provides pre-hospital basic life support treatment in accordance with the patient condition. Observes and reports changes in condition to other clinicians during care and at handoff.
  • Attends to the needs of the patient in a timely manner, keeping the patient comfortable during transport.
  • Identifies needs of the patient population served and delivers care specific to those needs (age, culture, language, hearing/vision impairment, etc.). Communicates with patient and caregiver at their level.
  • Obtains essential data, performs a thorough physical examination, ensures appropriate interventions, and updates the medical control physician as necessary.
  • Operates motor vehicles safely and professionally in compliance with laws and HMH policies for emergency vehicle operation; coordinates driving with partners.
  • Performs daily vehicle and equipment checks and walkarounds for hazards prior to operation.
  • Maintains fuel and fluid levels and vehicle interior cleanliness; removes trash and debris.
  • Demonstrates safe use of all vehicle equipment and appropriately parks and secures the vehicle when left unattended.
  • Operates wireless communication devices professionally to accept dispatches, obtain medical control, etc.
  • Cooperates with the Quality Assurance program to evaluate care quality, document trends, resolve problems, and monitor patient outcomes.
  • Provides complete verbal handoffs when transferring care to a receiving provider per policy.
  • Completes a patient care report for each patient contact in a timely manner in accordance with policy and applicable statutes and regulations.
  • Documents and reports unusual events/incidents in accordance with policy and procedures.
  • Responsible for routine troubleshooting, maintenance and cleaning of EMS equipment, vehicles, and station facilities; reports equipment failures per guidelines.
  • Maintains par levels of supplies and cleans/repairs as necessary throughout the shift.
  • Properly disposes of soiled linen and regulated medical waste per policy.
  • Provides education within the scope of an EMT as directed by leadership.
  • Maintains current certifications and notifies leadership if a certification cannot be validated.
  • Maintains clinical competency through required training and reviews, per policy and licensure standards.
  • Provides excellent customer service and initiates service recovery when necessary.
  • Behaves according to the Code of Conduct and Standards of Behavior, preserving public perception of the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education,

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Introduction to Incident Command System ICS-100 or related ICS/NIMS courses; ICS-200 or equivalent; ICS-700.a; IS-800.D; and related courses.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite).

Education,

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

  • Two years of BLS experience; 911 experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Current NJ EMT certification, or current NREMT-EMT, or state EMT certification with reciprocal eligibility; eligible non-NJ EMTs must obtain NJ EMT within 6 months of hire.
  • AHA Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers (BLS) or BLS Instructor Certification.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • CEVO Certified Emergency Vehicle Operator training or EVOC within 90 days of hire.
Working Conditions

The EMT must be capable of performing all listed duties during the assigned shift, including lifting/moving patients and equipment. Physical requirements include:

  • Driving an emergency vehicle in various conditions and adhering to laws.
  • Lifting a fully loaded ambulance stretcher (up to 350 pounds) with assistance, and placing it in the ambulance.
