About the Role:

the Pharmacy and Infusion Nurse is a multifaceted role responsible for providing comprehensive pharmaceutical and infusion services to patients, with a focus on Rheumatology medications, antibiotics, injections, wound care, and other relevant therapies. Additionally, this position serves as the back-up Immunization Coordinator for the Rural Health Clinic, ensuring the safe and efficient administration of vaccines. This position collaborates closely with the pharmacy team, physicians, ancillary departments, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, effective, and timely administration of medications and infusion therapies.

This role plays a unique and crucial part in promoting patient well-being and optimizing patient outcomes within the hospital’s small and critical care setting.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the Kansas State Board of Nursing, or a compact license authorized to work in the state of Kansas.
  • Completion of an accredited nursing program (Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
  • Experience working specifically in a pharmacy or medication management role within a hospital or outpatient clinic.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and pharmacy information systems.
  • Strong background in patient education and counseling related to medication therapies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pharmacology and medication administration principles.
  • Experience working in a clinical or healthcare setting involving medication management.
  • Medication Management
    • Works closely with the Pharmacy Manager and Pharmacist in Charge to review and verify medication orders, ensuring accuracy and appropriateness for rheumatology medications, antibiotics, and other therapies.
    • Prepare, dispense, and administer medications, including compounding as needed, adhering to established protocols and safety guidelines.
    • Delivers pharmaceuticals and select biologicals to all ancillary departments.
    • Assists in inventory management, including medication ordering, receiving, restocking, and handling of expired medications according to policies and procedures.
    • Label and package medications accurately for distribution
    • Educate patients on medication usage, potential side effects, and proper administration techniques.
  • Infusion Therapy
    • Administer intravenous (IV) medications, including rheumatology treatments, with a keen focus on patient comfort and safety.
    • Monitor patients during infusions, assess responses, and adjust medication as required following facility policies and procedures.
    • Document infusion procedures and patient responses accurately in the electronic health record (EHR) system.
  • Assess wounds, collaborating with physicians for effective treatment plans.
  • Perform wound care and dressing changes with precision and attention to detail.
  • Administer various injections, intramuscular (IM) and subcutaneous (SQ) medications, ensuring proper technique.
  • Performs insertion, care, troubleshooting and removal of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) line using approved vascular access and sterile technique. Ensuring patient safety and optimal outcomes.
  • Collaboration and Communication
    • Collaborate closely with the Pharmacy Manager, Pharmacist in Charge, physicians, and healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care and medication management.
    • Communicate effectively with patients and families regarding medication regimens, infusion procedures, and wound care instructions.
  • Safety and Infection Control
    • Adhere to stringent infection control protocols during medication preparation, administration, and wound care.
    • Maintain a safe and sterile environment, following established safety guidelines for medication handling and disposal.
  • Documentation and Record Keeping
    • Ensure accurate documentation of all patient interactions, medication administration, wound assessments, and vaccinations in the EHR system.
  • Serve as the tertiary point of contact for immunization coordination in the hospital clinic.
  • Administer vaccines to patients in accordance with recommended guidelines and protocols.
  • Maintain vaccine inventory, track immunization schedules, and ensure proper documentation.
  • Professional Development
    • Stay current with advancements in pharmacy, infusion therapy, wound care, and immunization practices through ongoing education and training.
    • Participate in departmental meetings and quality improvement initiatives.
