School Security Officer
Position Type: Full-Time
Reports To: School Principal / Director of Operations
Work Setting: K–8 School Environment
Starting Date: Immediately
Job DescriptionThe School Security Officer plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and orderly school environment. This position focuses on prevention, visibility, relationship building, and rapid response, ensuring that students, staff, and families feel secure throughout the school day. The ideal candidate is calm, observant, student-centered, and committed to supporting a positive school culture.
Key Responsibilities- Campus Safety & Supervision:
Monitor school entrances, hallways, common areas, and outdoor spaces to ensure safety and compliance; greet and screen visitors; supervise arrival, dismissal, lunch, and transitions; conduct regular safety checks of doors, gates, and security systems. - Student Support & Relationship Building:
Build positive, respectful relationships with students; use de-escalation strategies; assist staff during high traffic times and school events. - Incident Prevention & Response:
Respond promptly to safety concerns, disturbances, or emergencies; follow protocols for crises, lockdowns, evacuations, and medical emergencies; document incidents and communicate with administrators; enforce school policies fairly. - Collaboration & Communication:
Work closely with administrators, counselors, teachers, and support staff; participate in safety training and drills; communicate effectively with families and visitors while maintaining confidentiality.
- Required: Criminal Justice Degree; experience in security, public safety, law enforcement, military, or school-based supervision; strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with children and adults; remain calm and professional in stressful situations; training or willingness to be trained in de-escalation, conflict resolution, and emergency response.
- Preferred: Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly valued.
- Skills & Attributes: Reliable, punctual, highly observant; approachable and community-focused; skilled in de-escalation and conflict mediation; strong communication and teamwork abilities; commitment to equity, respect, and a positive school climate.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
