Holyoke Community College invites adjunct applications to teach COM 126:
History and Criticism of Film
in Fall 2026.

Course Description

This course offers an introduction to the study and history of film. It explores the ways in which film creates meaning through both technical and stylistic means. Topics include camera work and composition, lighting, sound, editing, storyline, film genres, and basic semiotic analysis. In addition, the course provides an overview of the major movements and representative films that comprise the history of motion pictures.

Students will become familiar with methods of film analysis, cultivate the ability to view films within thematic and historical contexts, and gain an understanding of the cultural and aesthetic contributions of the cinema.

Prerequisite(s):
Eligibility for ENG 101

Responsibilities

Adjunct faculty provides a quality learning experience on a semester basis. The faculty member reports to a dean and performs instruction-related duties and responsibilities in a timely manner and in accordance with the mission, policies and procedures of the college. The relationship to the student is one of teacher and facilitator of learning.

The faculty member will distribute and review the course syllabus during the first class meeting and must forward the dean no later than the end of the first week of classes. They will utilize active learning methods and a variety of instructional strategies designed to assist learners. These activities may include cooperative learning, experiential learning, and writing for learning and/or critical thinking initiatives.

The faculty member will remain abreast of ongoing developments in their professional content area(s), arrange for the acquisition and preparation of appropriate materials and equipment, and record and report student data including assessment of performance, such as final grade reports.

The faculty member will support students' learning goals by focusing on outcomes, considering student needs and abilities, familiarizing with academic and social support, accommodating individual differences, maintaining academic integrity, and being available to assist students in achieving their goals.

They may recommend campus services such as library, financial aid, counseling, and supplemental instruction. Adjunct faculty are expected to attend all scheduled classes; if a class must be missed, appropriate procedures must be followed and an alternate assignment provided.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Communication, Film or related area;
  • Firm grounding in the subject matter of the course being offered;
  • Experience using an online learning management system to support classroom instruction (Canvas preferred);
  • Commitment to and demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff & student body.

Position Details

Schedule: Tuesday + Thursday 11:00am-1:25pm

Compensation: DCE Salary - $1,397.00 Per Credit; no benefits.
