Position: Peer Tutors (CAPS)

Tutor Positions at Holyoke Community College

Under the supervision of the Director of the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS), a tutor supports HCC students in high-risk courses through weekly study sessions. CAPS is seeking three peer tutors, one in each of the following areas:

  • Writing
  • Math
  • Psychology (PSY-142 and PSY-200. Additionally preferred PSY-222)

Orientation and training are provided. On-the-job assistance and resources are available regularly. Employment dates:
August 24, 2026 through December 18, 2026.

Responsibilities include:

  • Understanding the course content and engaging students in active learning.
  • Helping students interpret course content by breaking down complex concepts.
  • Modeling or teaching study skills, time management, note-taking, and test-taking.
  • Working with students on a one-to-one or small-group basis to provide individualized attention.
  • Understanding a student's learning style and adapting the tutoring session accordingly.
  • Helping students become independent learners.
  • Assisting in record keeping by keeping track of the student's progress.
  • Becoming proficient in the software used for instruction.
  • Helping students integrate information technology within the given area.
  • Assisting the Assistive Technology Center to help students with disabilities.
  • Being able to identify and use resources to support student learning.
  • Attending scheduled meetings or workshops to stay up-to-date on best practices in tutoring.
  • Communicating with the instructor if needed to review tutorial services.
  • Communicating with other resources for assistance.
  • Exploring online tutoring as a resource to support student learning.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Required:

    • Part-time, non-benefited position (up to 18.5 hrs./week)
    • Peer I $15.00 per hour
    • High School Diploma or equivalency, no degree; one (1) to two (2) semesters as a college student; ability to work well with a diverse student population; good communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Peer II $17.00 per hour
    • Associate's degree; ability to work well with a diverse student population; good communication and interpersonal skills.
