Position:Peer Tutor – Writing, Math, Psychology
Under the supervision of the Director of the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS), a tutor supports HCC students in high-risk courses through weekly study sessions. CAPS is seeking three peer tutors, one in each of the following areas:
Writing, Math, Psychology (PSY-142, PSY-200, preferred PSY-222).
Orientation and training are provided. On-job assistance and resources are available regularly.
Employment dates:
August 24, 2026 through December 18, 2026.
- Understand the course content and engage students in active learning to identify their needs and tailor the session accordingly.
- Help students interpret course content by breaking down complex concepts into simpler terms.
- Model or teach study skills, time management, note-taking and test-taking strategies.
- Work with students one-to-one or in small groups to provide individualized attention, identify strengths and weaknesses, and give feedback.
- Adapt tutoring sessions to students’ learning styles (visual, auditory, etc.).
- Teach students to become independent learners and take ownership of their learning.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and provide regular updates to the instructor.
- Become proficient in instruction software and guide students in using technology to enhance learning.
- Assist with assistive technology for students with disabilities.
- Identify and use resources that support student learning.
- Attend scheduled meetings or workshops to stay current with best practices and share insights.
- Communicate with the instructor to review tutorial services and ensure alignment with course objectives.
- Collaborate with ESL staff, Math and Writing Coordinators, and other resources to support students.
- Explore online tutoring resources and guide students in using them.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Education:
Currently enrolled as an HCC student in good standing or recent HCC alum, without a Bachelor's degree. - Coursework:
Completed the specific course you want to support, earning at least a B+. - Interpersonal skills:
Good communication, active listening, patience, empathy, teamwork, conflict resolution and collaboration. - Technical skills:
Basic computer skills, Google Apps (training provided), organization, time management and planning. - Recommendation:
At least one faculty recommendation vouching for your proficiency in the course.
- Peer I: $15.00 per hour (up to 18.5 hrs./week)
- Peer II: $17.00 per hour (up to 18.5 hrs./week)
