Position OverviewUnder the supervision of the Director of the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS), a tutor supports HCC students in high‑risk courses through weekly study sessions. CAPS is seeking three peer tutors—one each in Writing, Math, and Psychology (PSY‑142, PSY‑200, and optionally PSY‑222). Orientation and training are provided; on‑job assistance and resources are available regularly.

Responsibilities- Understand course content and engage students in active learning, identifying needs and tailoring sessions accordingly.
- Break down complex concepts into simple terms to ensure student understanding.
- Model or teach study skills, time management, note‑taking, and test‑taking strategies.
- Workshop with students one‑to‑one or small groups, providing individualized attention and feedback.
- Adapt tutoring to each student’s learning style (visual, auditory, etc.).
- Encourage students to become independent learners by teaching effective study habits and ownership.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress, detailed notes, and updates for instructors.
- Proficiently use instructional software and guide students in its use.
- Integrate information technology tools into learning, providing instruction on usage.
- Assistive Technology Center: support students with disabilities and train them on assistive tools.
- Identify and recommend resources that support learning.
- Attend scheduled meetings and workshops to stay current on tutoring best practices and share experiences.
- Communicate with instructors to review tutorial services, ensuring alignment with course objectives, and provide progress feedback.
- Collaborate with ESL staff, Math and Writing Coordinators, and other supports to provide comprehensive student support.
- Explore and recommend online tutoring resources and guide students in using them.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Peer I ($15.00 per hour)
- High School Diploma or equivalency, no degree
- One to two semesters as a college student
- Ability to work well with a diverse student population
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Peer II ($17.00 per hour)
- Associate’s degree
- Ability to work well with a diverse student population
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Education:
Currently enrolled HCC student in good standing or recent HCC alum, without a Bachelor’s degree. - Coursework:
Completed the specified course with a minimum B+ grade. - Interpersonal skills:
Good communication, active listening, patience, empathy, teamwork, conflict resolution, and collaboration. - Technical skills:
Basic computer skills, proficiency with Google Apps (training provided), organization, time management, and planning. - Recommendation:
At least one faculty recommendation attesting to course proficiency.
