The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting
for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Homer, Alaska!
What You Will Be Doing:This five-month position in Homer blends office and field work, with approximately three days in the office and two days in the field each week. In the office, you’ll be the public face of the Division of Sport Fish, helping with sport fishing questions and regulations, licenses, charter logbooks, and fishing gear checkouts. In addition to public service, you’ll assist with invoice tracking, in-season fishery reporting, reviewing video weir files, entering salmon escapement data, and directing questions to other staff when needed.
In the field, you will focus on the Anchor River Chinook salmon marine survival project, assisting with capturing Chinook salmon smolt by beach seine and rotary screw trap, identifying juvenile salmon species, and PIT tagging Chinook salmon smolt. Additional opportunities to get hands on experience supporting other field projects can be expected, including razor clam abundance and hand-dig surveys, port sampling, salmon escapement monitoring, stocking salmon smolt, and Chinook brood stock collection.

The incumbent in this position will directly support that mission by providing sport fishing information to the public and by helping process in-season data to support the management of local fisheries. By assisting with the Chinook salmon marine survival project, this position helps expand understanding of salmon stocks across all life stages, supporting informed management decisions and the sustainable stewardship of Alaska’s fisheries.
The Homer Sport Fish management group is a large cohesive group with 4 biologists, and 14 fisheries technicians to monitor and manage a large diversity of fisheries and stocks in Lower Cook Inlet Management Area. This presents a unique opportunity to learn sport fisheries management and also be exposed to the wildlife and commercial fisheries aspects of Fish and Game, while gaining additional field experience.
This position would serve as excellent background for someone looking to diversify their skillset to further their career as a fisheries biologist or technician, or for someone looking for reliable office-based work in Homer.
This position will be stationed at the Homer office, with travel to the Anchor River field site 2 days a week. You’ll work with a small team of 2-3 at the front counter on the office-based days, and with another team of 2-8 on the field days. Additional occasional opportunities to assist with other projects throughout the management area will include travel to the beaches of Cook Inlet, the Homer Harbor, Deep Creek, and Ninilchik River, and the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon on the Homer Spit.

- Balance shifting work schedules and duties between office-based and field-based responsibilities, adapting to changing priorities and needs.
