Job Summary
The Director, Locomotive Engineer Compliance Training and Audit oversees the Locomotive Engineer Compliance and Training (LECT) teams across the United States and Canada, ensuring all expectations are met with the Student Locomotive Engineer (SLE) training programs and maintaining CN’s safety culture and efficiency.
Main Responsibilities- Lead and manage the LECT teams
- Drive efficiencies in operating metrics and fuel conservation
- Transform and enhance the safety culture through continuous evaluation and improvement of safety protocols
- Foster collaboration with operational departments to adopt best safety practices regionally
- Act as liaison between the LECT group and operational departments
- Approve assessments and strategies for problematic locations
- Create processes for weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly expectations of Locomotive Engineers across the enterprise
- Develop and implement strategies to enhance operational efficiency and safety
- Review Locomotive Engineer Training processes and standards enterprise‑wide
- Review and revise train handling rules in the U.S. and Canada to ensure alignment
- Approve onboarding and training of new LECT personnel
- Review and analyze safety trends through observations, electronic methods, and technology
- Collaborate with stakeholders to identify problematic locations and train handling concerns
- Utilize data to devise measurable solutions for safety enhancements
Office environment with a regular Monday‑Friday schedule; may require long hours, tight deadlines, and up to 50% travel within the U.S. and Canada.
Requirements Experience- Minimum 10 years of railroad operations experience
- Minimum 3 years as a qualified Locomotive Engineer
- High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED)
- Valid Driver’s License
- Training in Behavior‑Based Safety fundamentals
- Bachelor’s Degree in Transportation Management, Operations Management or related discipline (asset)
- Demonstrates agility and drives change
- Knows the business and stays current on industry needs
- Applies critical thinking, sets direction and inspires others
- Communicates with impact, collaborates and shares information
- Identifies potential safety and security risks and leads by example
- Considers environmental impacts in every decision and action
- Knowledge of railway safety regulations, standards, and best practices
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
- Fluently bilingual in English and French (asset)
