Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is seeking an Eligibility Advisor I – Temporary. This role supports the Access and Eligibility Services (AES) division, helping Texans access food, medical care, cash assistance, and other social services.
Job SummaryTemporary position expected to end on 08/31/2027. Employees may be eligible to transfer to a regular position depending on availability and performance. The role is full‑time, non‑exempt, day shift, with up to 10% travel.
Responsibilities / Essential Job Functions- Interview applicants and recipients in person or by phone to obtain financial and personal information for eligibility determination.
- Evaluate data from electronic and other sources and enter information into a computer‑based eligibility system.
- Compute and authorize benefits based on eligibility determinations.
- Process work in accordance with state and federal regulations and established procedures, guidelines, and time frames.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Must be able to work overtime, including weekends, and handle a highly stressful, fast‑paced environment under constant pressure to meet deadlines.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
(KSAs)
- Use fact‑finding techniques to obtain, analyze, and evaluate information from applicants.
- Read, understand, apply, and explain detailed regulations and policies.
- Perform basic arithmetic functions.
- Manage time efficiently by establishing priorities.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Follow written and oral directions and instructions.
- Operate computers for data entry and basic office software (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel).
- General knowledge and proficiency with computers, software, hardware, operating systems, and typing skills.
- Use Microsoft Teams and soft‑phone technology.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Preferably 60 semester or 90 quarter hours from an accredited college or university.
- One year of customer service experience with public contact (retail, call center, clerical, hospitality, banking, receptionist, etc.).
- Thirty semester or forty‑five quarter hours from an accredited college may substitute for one year of experience.
- Experience interviewing clients and gathering personal information in person or over the phone preferred.
Staff sign a Temporary Employment Agreement. Temporary employees may be eligible to transfer to a regular position, contingent upon availability, tenure, and performance. The posting may be used to fill positions in other regional locations.
Access and Eligibility Services Field Office normal hours:
Monday–Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Overtime may be required, including weekends. Background check required and no history of fraudulent activity. Strong conditions for over payment repayment if applicable.
