POSITIONPURPOSE:
The Surgical Technician/Sterile Processing Technician provides essential support in surgical procedures and sterile processing, ensuring safe and effective patient care in accordance with Medina Healthcare System (MHS) policies and medical staff directives. This role involves assisting in nursing care activities, performing “scrub” duties, and managing the cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment. The technician must be able to follow written and verbal instructions, maintain aseptic technique, and respond to emergency surgical needs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Surgical Technician Duties:
- Prepare operating rooms, supplies, and equipment for surgical procedures.
- Assist in patient preparation, draping, and maintaining a sterile field.
- Handle surgical instruments, sponges, sutures, catheters, and dressings during procedures.
- Support physicians during endoscopies and other procedures.
- Assist in lifting, transporting, and positioning patients.
- Transport patients to and from surgical areas.
- Assist in specimen preparation and delivery.
- Perform terminal cleaning of OR suites when needed.
- Remain on-call and within 30 minutes of the hospital for emergency surgeries.
- Clean and disinfect surgical instruments and equipment.
- Operate ultrasonic cleaners and autoclaves.
- Assemble and store sterile instruments and supplies.
- Use chemical solutions for high-level disinfection.
- Fold and assemble linens and restock supplies in designated areas.
- Monitor inventory levels and notify supervisors of shortages.
- Order and receive supplies, ensuring proper stock rotation.
- Maintain effective communication with other departments and medical staff.
- Attend required in-service training, hospital orientation, and annual skills fairs.
- Serve as a preceptor for new hires when requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned within licensure scope.
EDUCATION:
- Completion of an accredited Operating Room Technical Program or Surgical Technician / Sterile Processing preferred.
- Licensure, registry, or certification as an Operating Room Technician preferred.
- Nursing license preferred
- BLS certification required within 30 days of hire.
- Completion of initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service line, facility, and department/unit.
