Position: Control Tower Operator (Kanawha), NIGHT Shift | Medina Rock & Rail Quarry, Hondo, TX

Kanawha Control Tower Operator

The Kanawha Control Tower Operator is responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient loading of trains with finished products using a state-of-the-art automated loadout system. This role includes managing data entry, invoicing, and billing processes while ensuring accurate material specifications and compliance with operational procedures. The operator will also coordinate closely with Union Pacific (UP) railway personnel and railcar repair contractors to facilitate smooth rail operations.

Additional responsibilities include maintaining housekeeping standards within the plant during periods between train loadings. This position requires strong attention to detail, adherence to safety regulations, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Standard working hours are: NIGHT Shift- 6:00 PM - 6:00 AM; this role primarily covers operations at the Kanawha loadout plant, however, operators must be prepared to work a schedule that is subject to train movements and availability, requiring flexibility to accommodate business needs.

New Hire Orientation & Safety Training are held only ONCE a month, in the San Antonio, TX office. Be prepared for travel and overnight accommodation up to 1-3 days. Accommodations & reimbursements are covered by Martin Marietta for anyone traveling more than 50 miles.

Essential responsibilities include being proactive in safety and working well in a team environment, operating equipment safely and efficiently in accordance with training and manufacturer's instruction, starting, monitoring, and regulating loading equipment within the company guidelines and safety standards, adhering to MSHA and plant safety rules, policies, procedures, and regulations, performing pre-shift safety inspection on the system, equipment and accessories, performing preventative maintenance and service equipment, inspecting equipment and reporting needed repairs to supervision, assisting in plant maintenance and repairs, responsible for good housekeeping of plant and equipment, performing duties with minimum supervision, aiding in the training of co-workers as needed, assisting with operation of other equipment as needed, and all other duties as assigned.

Preferred education and experience include a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience, steady work history and strong career performance, and 1+ year railyard, short line, or aggregate production plant experience.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include the ability to work 12 hour shifts, frequent weekends, overtime, and holidays as needed, the ability to read equipment operating manual, understand complex plant systems, and make effective decisions based on plant needs, the ability to complete pre-shift inspection report, the ability to read and interpret gauges/sensor outputs, basic mathematical aptitude to complete daily reports, working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, ability to wear all required safety equipment, ability to communicate over CB radio or with hand signals and warning sounds, with coworkers regarding movement of vehicles, trains, and mobile equipment, performing duties in a safe manner, and being service oriented with proven ability to work in a team environment.

Physical requirements include the ability to wear a hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection, ability to work at various heights, ability to climb stairs to a height of 100 ft. and work at this height, ability to climb on and off equipment to operate and service, ability to bend, stoop, climb, and reach around all areas of equipment, capable of lifting and carrying up to 45 lbs, ability to walk across steep/rough terrain, ability to use hand tools such as shovels, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.,

ability to operate radio, CB radio, computer, and other equipment as required, good hand/eye coordination and ability to operate hand/foot controls, and ability to work outside in all weather conditions consistent with extreme ambient temperatures: heat, cold, wetness, dryness, dust, and noisy conditions.
