Job Summary
Performs highly advanced inventory and retail sales work in a unit commissary. The role involves coordinating store or warehouse operations; displaying and selling merchandise; ensuring compliance with security requirements, loss prevention controls, and policies. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
Essential Functions- Coordinate commissary operations, sell merchandise to employees and inmates, and accurately record sales and receipts.
- Schedule and conduct periodic inventory, determine merchandise needs, dispose of surplus, reconcile inventory with asset records, and maintain cleanliness and appearance of the commissary.
- Review and approve requisitions for supplies and merchandise; review invoices for accuracy; prepare and review inventory control reports; monitor inventory databases.
- Supervise employees and inmates; provide technical assistance in inventory control, management, and ordering methods.
- Assist in maintaining security of assigned inmates.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Accounting, or related field. Alternatively, 4 years full-time commissary/retail/sales/inventory experience may substitute for degree (30 semester hours per year). - Experience:
Four (4) years full-time commissary, retail sales, or inventory management plus three (3) years full-time commissary, retail sales, or inventory management and one (1) year full-time correctional custody or law enforcement experience. - Preferred:
Experience supervising employees, using an automated point‑of‑sale system, and working with automated inventory control systems. - Knowledge &
Skills:
Inventory methods, record‑keeping, automated systems, retail sales functions, agency policies, effective communication, coordination with staff and agencies, problem‑solving, computer use, record preparation, technical reporting, work planning, electronic communication, and training/supervising employees.
- Ability to walk, stand, sit, kneel, push, stoop, reach, grasp, pull, bend repeatedly, climb stairs and ladders, identify colors, hear with aid, see, write, count, read, speak, analyze, alphabetize, lift and carry 45 lbs. and over, perceive depth, operate a motor vehicle and motor equipment.
- Work conditions may include indoor/outdoor, machines with moving parts, radiant and electrical energy, close contact, protracted or irregular hours, fumes and gases, and travel by car, van, bus, and airplane.
- Equipment used: computer, reader, calculator, copier, fax machine, telephone, dolly, and automobile.
