Position Overview

Energy Contract Manager (Professional) – 4 positions available within Hawaiian Electric Company’s Renewable Acquisition Division. Roles may be based on Oahu or Maui.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage development, evaluation, negotiation, and administration of energy power purchase agreements for Oahu, Hawaii Island, and Maui County.
  • Negotiate and administer agreements with Independent Power Producers, Co‑generators, and Qualifying Facilities.
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams in the evaluation and negotiation of renewable energy purchase proposals, serving as the lead negotiator.
  • Propose resources and funding needed to support program objectives and maintain stakeholder relationships with project managers, lawyers, accountants, and officials.
  • Collaborate with technical experts on system planning, design, and operations; assist with community engagement and public meetings.
  • Prepare and deliver expert testimony, presentations, and responses to agencies such as the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, State Legislature, and in legal arbitration.
  • Develop and administer policies, procedures, and reports supporting the Department’s mission; substitute for the Manager in their absence.
  • Participate in company emergency response activities as assigned.
Essential Functions
  • Negotiate and administer power purchase agreements, ensuring consistent interpretation, compliance, and proper administration.
  • Serve as "matrix" manager, prioritizing project tasks and supporting completion through team members and consultants.
  • Plan, develop, and coordinate acquisition of renewable energy resources via RFPs and competitive procurement; provide strategic planning and communications.
  • Provide technical assistance, advise senior management, and serve as primary negotiator on renewable energy issues.
  • Review, approve monthly payments, and direct liaison activities during abnormal operating conditions.
  • Support departmental priorities through policy development, technical support, and administrative reporting.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS – Knowledge Requirements
  • Working knowledge of engineering and/or business principles; bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledge of Renewable Energy technologies and utility‑scale applications.
  • Understanding of project management fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with PUC, environmental, state and federal laws and renewable energy project regulations.
  • Understanding of contract terms and conditions.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and common office productivity software.
Skills Requirements
  • Motivated self‑starter able to manage multiple projects with competing priorities.
  • Excellent written communication skills for internal and external audiences.
  • Strong leadership, collaboration, conflict resolution, and training abilities.
  • Effective negotiation, influencing, and persuasiveness; ability to handle confidential information.
  • Creative negotiation skills for complex technical and financial energy projects.
  • Analytical and administrative skills for forecasting, data processing, and policy implementation.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple complex projects.
  • Adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic environment.
  • Valid State of Hawaii driver’s license or ability to qualify.
Experience Requirements
  • 5–7 years of experience in power system planning, design, operations, RFP development, contract negotiation, legal, or business development.
  • 5–7 years of experience with computer systems and applications such as MS Project and Excel.
  • 3–5 years of analytical experience in renewable energy, data processing, or related fields.
Compensation

Hiring range: $109,900 – $142,600 annually.
