The P DN WATCH OFFICE of the P EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS & RESPONSE Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has a vacancy for a Utility Risk Monitoring Specialist. The role is professional-level and focuses on real-time detection and monitoring of conditions by leveraging information from field teams, meteorology tools, live video and audio feeds, databases, emergency alert systems, social media, the National Weather Service, local public safety authorities, and other agencies.
EssentialFunctions
- Gather real‑time publicly available information and open‑source research to monitor and investigate weather and environmental elements, interpret data to provide situational awareness, and perform data analyses for overall assessment of hazards, risks, and impacts. Initiate or assist with protective measures and mitigation strategies, ensuring notifications and updates to managers, directors, executives, regulators, and stakeholders. Escalate response and mitigation actions when needed and coordinate logistics support until incidents are resolved.
- Collaborate with internal teams to validate hazards and risks; monitor, detect, and document occurrences of pre‑identified hazards or threats to company/public safety and assets/property. Provide situational awareness to leadership and functional areas, supply updates during group meetings, and assist with training and onboarding of new analysts. Execute fire prediction analysis and special projects as required.
- Participate in company emergency response activities and pre‑emergency response preparation.
- BA/BS in business, fire science, engineering, environmental science, or related field. Four (4) years of relevant experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.
- Thorough knowledge of data and reporting analysis typically gained through college level courses or equivalent experience.
- Working knowledge of general electrical utility procedures and operations.
- Proficiency with general computer applications (MS Project, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GIS, Google Earth, weather modeling, dashboards, alerting systems).
- Working knowledge of open‑source research techniques and publicly available information (e.g., NOAA, NWS, Google Earth).
- Working knowledge of business process analysis techniques for assessing operational performance and process/performance management standards.
- High attention to detail, structure, and rigor with strong analytical skills.
- Strong problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to handle emergency response situations and work in a high‑stress environment.
- Adaptability to rapidly changing priorities and strategic direction.
- Self‑starter capability and ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to conceptualize new ideas quickly.
- Ability to work independently with minimal guidance.

- Availability to work a rotating shift schedule, including nights, holidays, and weekends, to support 24‑hour, 365‑day operations.
- Multiple (5+ years) of data analysis and reporting experience.
- Multiple (5+ years) of project or program management experience, preferably within emergency management or wildfire mitigation.
- Several (3–5) years of experience developing and implementing programs.
- A few (1–2) years of experience in data research within planning, forecasting, marketing, engineering, statistics, economics, finance, or technical/scientific data analysis (highly desirable).
