Summary
CYP Assistants work directly with children and youth, keeping them actively engaged, well‑cared for, and safe while participating in the CYP program. They help children develop social skills, make healthy choices, build self‑help and school readiness skills, and explore their environment.
DutiesThe duties are organized into key areas:
- Curriculum – Develop, review, and implement schedules and activity plans that meet children’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive needs. Incorporate special instructions from parents and prepare special program options for children with special requirements.
- Indoor and Outdoor Environment – Prepare and maintain activity areas, set up displays, inventory equipment, and secure supplies and facilities.
- Interactions and Relationships – Create a positive environment that sustains participant interest and promote positive interactions with other children, youth and adults. Use approved child‑guidance techniques.
- Supervision of Children and Youth – Provide care, oversight, and accountability in compliance with DoD, NAF, and local policies. Monitor safety, supervise during activities and outings, and report any signs of illness, abuse, or neglect.
- Parent and Employee Communication – Interact professionally with employees, parents, and command personnel. Provide daily feedback and participate in conferences.
- Assessment – Observe and document developmental progress, and participate in program evaluation using rating scales and other tools.
- Compliance – Assist in maintaining DoD certification and national accreditation. Notify supervisors of health, fire, and safety concerns.
- Additional Responsibilities – Collect, maintain, and report program participation data, and perform other related duties as assigned.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Complete required training certificates and maintain certifications for DoD Child and Youth Programs.
- Pass all applicable records and background checks.
- Undergo pre‑employment and random drug testing.
- Pass a pre‑employment physical, provide evidence of immunization, and be free of communicable diseases.
- Employment contingent upon proof of education if not provided at time of application.
- Use of marijuana is illegal under Federal law; a positive test results in withdrawal of the job offer and a six‑month ineligibility.
Resumes must demonstrate experience and knowledge, skills, and ability (KSAs) related to this position. Applicants are encouraged to be clear and specific.
- Entry Level (CY‑1702‑01) – Ability to communicate in English, follow instructions, complete DoN training, promote working relationships, and work cooperatively as a team member.
- Intermediate Level (CY‑1702‑01) – All entry‑level abilities plus knowledge of basic child and youth development principles, implementation of developmentally‑appropriate practices, interpretation of curriculum, and at least six months of experience working with children or youth.
- Target Level (CY‑1702‑02) – All entry and intermediate abilities plus advanced knowledge and skill in child and youth development, and at least one year of experience.
- Must provide a copy of your high school diploma, GED, or college transcripts when you apply.
Incumbents must satisfactorily complete all background checks for child care positions, including fingerprint checks, Tier 1 with Child Care check, State Criminal History Repository check, and Installation Records Check. Automatic disqualification applies for certain convictions and negligence. A one‑year probationary period may be required for some positions. Participation in Direct Deposit/Electronic Fund Transfer within the first 30 days is required. E‑Verify is used for eligibility verification.
