Job OverviewFood Safety Specialists promote, protect, and maintain a healthy and safe environment for the public through inspection, education, and enforcement activities. They implement statutes, rules, regulations relating to environmental sanitation and safety programs concerning foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices. Work includes identifying, mitigating, and preventing disease transmission through improperly prepared foods, contaminated waters, and adulteration or misbranding of foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices.
Specialists perform the full range of independent environmental sanitation work assignments in a defined geographic or specialty work area. They apply all phases of the sanitation sciences, have knowledge of socioeconomic conditions, and use tact in enforcement and interpretation of sanitation laws.
Legal Authorization to Work: Applicants must be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
Education: Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in one of the physical or biological sciences.
Transcript Verification: Must attach official transcript(s) to verify academic training.
Professional Experience- One and one‑half (1‑1/2) years of professional inspectional or investigational work involved in the interpretation and application of laws and regulations in public health. Experience must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of principles, practices, and objectives of environmental health programs, thorough knowledge of pertinent regulations and laws, and working knowledge of bacteriology, chemistry, physics, vector control methods, and social sciences.
Non‑qualifying experience: Technical work experience in vector control programs that do not involve enforcement activities for Food Safety Specialist functions is not qualifying.
Other RequirementsApplicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
