Position Overview

MASON is currently seeking an architectural historian. The work entails historical investigations of buildings and infrastructure-related structures such as roads and bridges, canals, culverts, lava rock walls, and historic irrigation infrastructure from Hawai‘i’s former sugar plantations. Field work for these resources may be in the urban environment or entail site visits to remote locations.

Work tasks will include conducting fieldwork and research, writing reports, evaluating the historic significance and integrity of historical resources, and evaluating effects of proposed projects on historic resources. Work products include writing HABS/HAER/HALS, National/Hawaii Register of Historic Places nominations, historic inventory surveys, historic context studies, and historical consulting for State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD) project reviews. Roughly 35% of the work is in the field, while 65% is in the office.

  • Geographic Information System (GIS) skills.
  • Graphic support skills (Photoshop/InDesign).

An ideal candidate is one who works well within a team but is also able to manage individual projects alone. Above all, we seek a candidate with good communication skills.
