Job Title: Drawing & Painting Studio Programs Teacher

Employment Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt. Temporary Assignment Date 04/02/2025 to 06/28/2025.

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Studio Programs Manager, the Studio Programs Teacher facilitates classes and workshops for groups of all ages, providing short-term coverage for Teaching Artists as needed. The Studio Programs Teacher leads classes and workshops across a variety of artistic disciplines and co-creates and plans curriculum for classes and workshops with teaching artists and the Studio Programs Management Team.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in Studio Arts, Art Education, or related field and at least 1 year of teaching experience in related field.
  • Broad knowledge of painting and drawing processes, techniques, and skills.
  • Ability to create clear written lesson plans that articulate how student learning objectives are met.
  • Knowledge of and ability to demonstrate safe handling of studio equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with a diverse population of students and visitors, including speaking to large groups.
  • Ability to work within and support a diverse community of visitors, artists, and employees.
  • Honesty, integrity, enthusiasm, perspective, and a strong work ethic supported by commitment and follow-through.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree or higher in Studio Arts or Art Education and at least 3 years of teaching experience in a related field.
  • Knowledge of object-based learning in a museum context.
  • Knowledge of Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) pedagogy and Universal Design for Learning.
  • Experience teaching Pre-K through adult students as well as programs for English language learners and students with disabilities.
  • Experience with designing and implementing a comprehensive art curriculum that fosters artistic exploration, while tailoring lessons to meet student needs.
  • Certification in first aid.
  • Understanding of the Honolulu Museum of Art’s established identity and dedication to advancing it.
  • Facilitates classes and workshops as needed across various artistic disciplines.
  • Works with the Studio Programs Management team to develop curriculum and teach the museum’s programs for all ages and abilities, which includes Pre-K – 12 and adult studio programs as well as programs for English language learners and students with disabilities.
  • Integrates HoMA’s collections, the lending collection, and special exhibitions into the syllabus and programming for all ages and abilities.
  • Collaborates with teaching artists in designing and executing studio programs.
  • Communicates specific needs or concerns related to studios and studio equipment.
  • Works with the Studio Programs Coordinator to procure supplies and materials needed for individual programs and events.
  • Works with other teachers to maintain and manage an attractive and orderly studio that supports a welcoming and conducive learning environment.
  • Gathers and prepares all supplies necessary for each program and puts all equipment away at program completion.
  • Regularly attends program/department meetings and all professional development workshops.
  • Documents progress of programming via photos, data, and evaluations.
  • Supervises and leads Teaching Assistants and volunteers.
  • In partnership with HR, supports the leadership team in ensuring equitable experiences, strengthening inclusion acumen, and promoting a culture of inclusivity and belonging that embraces the contributions of all staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation:

The salary for this position is $25.00 per hour. Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Temporary employees are eligible for the following museum benefits:

  • Shop, Museum Café, and Art School discounts
  • Onsite parking provided
  • Temp employees may be eligible for medical insurance coverage if they work 4 consecutive weeks at 20 hours or more.

Working Conditions and Atmosphere:

Part-Time teachers are expected to work approximately 15 - 19 hours per week. The Art School is open Wednesday through Sunday, with morning and evening classes. Ability to operate general office equipment including computer, copier, printers, fax machine, etc. Ability to lift, carry, push, pull, up to 25 lbs. of general office material or equipment.
