The Department of Sociology, College of Social Sciences (CSS), University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM) in Honolulu, Hawai'i invites applicants for the position of Assistant Professor (F-3). This is a 9-month, full-time, permanent, tenure-track faculty appointment to begin August 1, 2026, subject to position clearance and availability of funds.

We are seeking a candidate with a commitment to contribute to one or more of our department's other areas of specialization, which are Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Class;
Asia, Pacific, and Hawai'i in Regional and Global Contexts;
Crime, Law, and Social Control; and Nationalism, Globalization, and Sustainability.

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Develop a research record; undertake research/scholarly or creative projects in the field or branch of learning represented by and consistent with the goals of the UHM CSS.

* Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and/or books.

* Teach introductory and upper-level graduate and undergraduate courses, including courses on medical sociology and quantitative methods.

* Seek extramural funding.

* Maintain a professional level of performance and productivity in assigned areas of teaching, research, and service.

* Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in quantitative methods as well as the candidate's areas of interest.

* Contribute to development activities at the discipline, department, and campus levels.

* Work independently and with colleagues to select, develop, and revise curricular materials, instructional techniques, and assessment strategies at the course, credential and/or discipline levels.

* Provide service and leadership to the department, college, university, and community.

* Participate in professional and self-development activities.

* Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications:

* A Ph.D. in sociology or a related field. ABDs will be considered only if all degree requirements will be met; ABDs must submit a letter from their committee chair attesting that the dissertation and all degree requirements will be completed prior to the date of hire;
Ph.D. degree is conferred by date of hire;

* Demonstrated ability to conduct research;

* Ability to teach introductory and advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in quantitative methods;

* Demonstrated ability to mentor students;

* Ability to contribute to our specialization in Health, Aging, and Medical Sociology;

* Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.

Desirable

Qualifications:

* Demonstrated teaching experience in both sociology of health and quantitative methods.

* Demonstrated ability to mentor and teach graduate and undergraduate students with varying backgrounds.
