Kamehameha Schools is searching for Kumu (Instructors) to support our Ho'omāka'ika'i Summer Program! This program hosts 5 week-long overnight sessions for rising 6th graders to support connecting with and exploring Hawaiian culture. If you possess familiarity with Hawaiian cultural practices, values, and Hawaiian Culture Based Education (HCBE) approaches and a passion for sharing your knowledge, this is the perfect opportunity for you!

We are also hiring for substitutes/on-call Kumu, and selected candidates may be offered such a position depending on availability and need.

In total, we are seeking two types of kumu:

* Kumu with weekly assignments to a group of students

* Substitute/On-Call Kumu

Hire Dates:
March 2 (Monday) - July 17 (Friday)

* Weekly Training:
March 2 - June 6

* Program Dates:
June 7 - July 10

* Closeout:
July 13 - July 17

Shift Types:

Day Shift

* Sunday: 11am-5pm

* Monday - Thursday: 6am-3:30pm

* Friday: 6:30am-5pm

Evening Shift

* Sunday: 11am-8pm

* Monday - Thursday: 12pm-8pm

* Friday: 10am-5pm

Job Summary

Responsible for developing and delivering Hawaiian cultural lessons and activities including, but not limited to language, history, culture, place names, oli, music and hula. Conducts various forms of evaluation to ensure effectiveness of program. Provides guidance and counseling to students. Supervises and participates with students in all field trips and activities.

Essential Responsibilities

Curriculum Development & Instruction

* Develop, prepare, and instruct students in lessons and activities that are aligned to program's KOA overview. These include but are not limited to language, history, culture, place names, oli, music, and hula.

Operations

* Understands and follows Kamehameha Schools' policies and procedures relevant to the Enrichment Department. Supervises, supports, and participates with students on all field trips and activities. Assists with the preparation for and delivery of program Hô'ike.

Students

* Provides guidance and counseling to students.

Assessment

* Administers program assessment tools that measure student growth and program effectiveness. Provides feedback on program curriculum, lessons, and activities.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications - An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the requirements listed.

* Bachelor's Degree in Hawaiian Studies, Hawaiian Language, Elementary Education, or closely related field.

* Minimum of 1 year of related work experience.

* Demonstrate knowledge of Hawaiian culture and history.

* Develop culturally relevant activities and lessons.

* Teach and work effectively with elementary, middle school and high school age students.

* Use good human relations and communication skills.

* Deal with conflict involving staff, students, and parents.

* Use experience in group dynamics, organizational techniques and team building.

* Chaperone, instruct and supervise students while on hikes and long walks during field trips which may involve strenuous physical activity.

Preferred Qualifications:

* Working/Conversational Hawaiian language.

* Knowledge of culturally relevant and appropriate approaches in education.

* Knowledge of culturally congruent teaching strategies.

* Knowledge and experience in project-based learning.

* Driver's license.

* Certified in first aid desirable.

* Knowledge of KS operations and programs desirable.

Physical Requirements

* Frequently sits, perform desk-based computer tasks and grasp light or fine manipulation, talk or hear.

* Occasionally stand and/or walk, write by hand, and lift and/or carry, push and/or pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
