Summary
The State 4-H Education Specialist will play a critical role in advancing the quality and reach of Hawaii's 4-H Livestock Program by designing, implementing, and supporting educational events, skills competitions, and outreach efforts focused on youth livestock education and development. The position will collaborate with 4-H faculty, livestock faculty, staff, volunteers, industry partners, and youth to maximize program impact and ensure compliance with best practices in animal agriculture and youth development.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Provide support on design, coordinate, and deliver high-quality educational programming for 4-H livestock projects at the county and state levels, including livestock shows, judging contests, and workshops related to animal husbandry, ethics, and showmanship.
* Facilitate the annual implementation and certification process for the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) program, ensuring that all participants achieve proficiency in meat animal quality assurance and animal welfare standards.
* Collaborate with 4-H faculty, county extension agents, statewide staff, local volunteers, and representatives from animal agriculture groups to organize, resource, and support all major 4-H livestock events.
* Provide guidance and support to the 4-H affiliate State 4-H Livestock Council and related county-level 4-H livestock committees to ensure 4-H livestock program consistency and effectiveness.
* Provide guidance and support to the State 4-H Horse Council and county-level 4-H horse committees, and assisting with the coordination of equine education, events, and exhibitions.
* Provide logistical support for the annual State 4-H Farm Fair, State 4-H Livestock Show, and State 4-H Horse Show, managing event planning, participant communications, and evaluation.
* Assist Livestock Agent, 4-H Faculty, and other staff with educational efforts as appropriate
* Develop educational resource materials related to livestock science, youth development, and agricultural literacy.
* Collect, analyze, and report participation data, program outcomes, and impacts for annual reporting and program improvement.
* Develop and maintain online educational materials, newsletters, and social media content highlighting 4-H livestock activities and learning outcomes.
Minimum Qualifications
* Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Animal Science, Education, Agriculture, Agricultural Education or related fields or related field; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
* Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
* Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
* Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
* Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, and proficient in utilizing advanced computer software and digital tools for comprehensive word processing, data management, email communication, and online research.
Desirable Qualifications
* Demonstrated professional experience in livestock or horse production, management, or exhibition.
