Position: Adjunct - Social Work (Special Appointment Faculty)

Job Summary

Hawai’i Pacific University (HPU) is a private, non-profit institution of approximately 3,500 undergraduate and 800 graduate students. Founded in 1965, it is Hawaii’s largest private university with its core campus in the heart of Honolulu’s business district.

The College of Liberal Arts is seeking Social Work Adjunct Faculty to teach limited BSW and MSW social work in‑person and online courses as assigned. The MSW program will be transitioning to an online format (Spring 2025 is the anticipated start date) and thus online teaching is required. The successful candidate may be a resident in Hawai’i or may work remotely.

They will also be responsible for planning and supervising semester activities that meet course objectives, maintaining student records, and evaluating student performance, including assigning grades.

Location

This position is open to both on‑site and remote instructors. On‑site instruction is located at our downtown Honolulu campus sites (Waterfront Plaza and/or Aloha Tower Marketplace).

Compensation

Doctorate candidates: $1,150 per credit ($3,450 per credit course)

Masters candidates: $1,050 per credit hour ($3,150 per credit course)

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
  • MSW from a program accredited by Council on Social Work Education or equivalency established
  • Two years post graduate Social Work experience
Desired Qualifications
  • A doctorate in Social Work, Social Welfare or related field
  • LCSW/LICSW for clinical practice courses
  • Two or more years of teaching experience at the adjunct or full‑time faculty level, encompassing both in‑person and online synchronous/asynchronous teaching methods.
  • Experience with Blackboard and Canvas
Other Qualifications
  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance is not available for this position.
  • Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU’s summer and winter break, if necessary.
  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
  • Able to teach classes scheduled during days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Able to teach classes at multiple locations on O'ahu or online remotely (However, candidates must be legal residents of the United States).
  • Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that utilizes excellent time and stress management skills.
  • Must commit to adhering to the NASW Code of Ethics
Key Responsibilities /Essential Job Functions 1. Teaching (95%)
  • Develop a syllabus of course activities that meets the requirements of the course description, establishes appropriate student learning outcomes, and provides for appropriate class activities throughout the semester.
  • Plan and deliver individual classes that confirm to the syllabus and other requirements of the University.
  • Teach classes scheduled during days, evenings, and weekends at multiple locations on O'ahu or online remotely.
  • Use Canvas or Blackboard (Learning Management System) to monitor discussion boards, post announcements, and grade assignments.
  • Maintain records on student participation and performance, evaluate student performance on the basis of established student learning outcomes, and assign grades.
  • Submit required documents (including student grades) in a timely manner.
  • Meet deadline and following direction of the program/department chair.
2. Performs other related duties as assigned (5%)
  • Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
