Position Description
This posting is being used to fill various Educational Assistant positions at the specified location. The authorized level of these positions is Educational Assistant III, but applications are accepted down to Educational Assistant I in case of recruiting difficulties.
Salary Range- Educational Assistant I (SR‑10): $3,019.78 per month
- Educational Assistant II (SR‑12): $3,260.76 per month
- Educational Assistant III (SR‑14): $3,526.98 per month
- Independently performs various academic and instruction‑related support activities, tutors students, observes and reports on student progress and difficulties.
- Provides social, vocational, and daily living instruction to students with disabilities, observes and reports on progress, and suggests modifications.
- Performs assigned counseling support activities, develops rapport, encourages expression of problems, and carries out approved activities that promote a healthy self‑concept, social skills, and early identification of special needs.
- Provides articulation reinforcement lessons and repetitive drills to correct or improve speech sounds as instructed by the speech pathologist, and may receive training related to common speech/language disorders.
- Graduation from high school or equivalent and either:
- Successful completion of an examination approved by the Hawaii State Department of Education (e.g., the Para Pro or Para Pathways Assessment provided by the Education Testing Service).
- At least 48 baccalaureate‑level semester credits from an accredited institution that included 3 credits in mathematics and 3 credits in English.
- An associate degree or higher from an accredited institution.
- Educational Assistant I: 0 general years, 0 specialized years.
- Educational Assistant II: 1 general year, 0 specialized years.
- Educational Assistant III: 1 general year, 1 specialized year.
Note: One (1) year of experience is defined as a school year, which is approximately 180 instructional days in Hawaii.
General ExperiencePaid or volunteer experience that involved direct interaction with people and demonstrated the ability to provide and elicit information, observe, evaluate, and take action or report accurately on different situations.
Specialized ExperienceWork experience providing direct academic, personal, social, vocational development, or behavioral services to children, students, and/or individuals with disabilities, preferably in an educational setting supporting professional staff.
Driver's License RequirementSome positions require possession of a current, valid driver's license.
Lift and Carry Requirement- Some positions require the ability to lift and carry up to 65 pounds unassisted.
- Some positions require the ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds with assistance.
- Possession of a Child Development Associate credential, or completion of a related program from an accredited institution approved by the Department, may substitute for one‑half (½) year of Specialized Experience.
- Completion of 15 baccalaureate‑level semester credits may substitute for one‑half (½) year of General Experience up to a maximum of one (1) year.
- Completion of 15 baccalaureate‑level semester credits in Education or closely related field may substitute for one‑half (½) year of Specialized Experience up to a maximum of two (2) years.
- Possession of an associate degree may substitute for one (1) year of General Experience.
- Possession of an associate degree in Education or closely related field may substitute for all General and Specialized Experience.
- Possession of a bachelor degree or higher may substitute for all General and Specialized Experience.
- For high school graduates from a Department school, each of the following may substitute for one (1) year of Specialized Experience up to a maximum of two (2) years:
- Completion of the Level 4 course in either the Teaching As a Profession (TAP) or Learning Support Professionals (LSP) program.
- Possession of one (1) credit for relevant work‑based learning (internship, fieldwork, etc.) through the TAP or LSP programs.
