Position: Educational Interpreter I, II - Special Needs Section

This posting is to fill Educational Interpreter positions that provide services to students at various schools as needed and assigned by the Office of Student Support Services - Special Needs Section. The authorized level of these positions is Educational Interpreter II. Applications are also being accepted down to the Educational Interpreter I level in the event of recruiting difficulties.

Responsibilities
  • Use recognized interpreting and/or transliterating skills to facilitate communication between deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students and others including faculty, staff, administrators, and other students.
  • Follow the classroom schedule with deaf or hard‑of‑hearing students to interpret classroom activities, including lectures, conversations, films, special projects, and assemblies as dictated by the students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and as assigned by students’ teachers.
  • Serve as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships within the school environment.
  • Familiarize oneself with the content of the class lessons to ensure accurate representation of the lesson.
  • Observe and report progress or problems to a student’s assigned teacher, and confer with students, parents, faculty, and administrators in areas related to student learning and behavior.
  • Participate in meetings, workshops and other training activities to keep abreast of current methods and trends in the field.
  • May teach basic sign language to students or staff.
  • Basic Education Requirements
    • 48 semester credits (baccalaureate level courses) from an accredited institution recognized by the Hawaii Department of Education, with at least 3 credits in math and 3 in English.
    • Completion of an Educational Interpreter training program (e.g., AS or AA with specialization in Educational Interpreting) or equivalent.
    Experience Requirements
    • Educational Interpreter I: 1 year general experience, 0 years specialized experience.
    • Educational Interpreter II: 1 year general experience, 1 year specialized experience.
    Substitutions Allowed
    • Successful completion of the Para Pro Assessment provided by ETS may substitute for the NCLB basic education requirements.
    • Completion of an ASL/Interpreting Program leading to a Bachelor’s degree may substitute for the General and Specialized experience requirements for both levels.
    Certification Requirement
    • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) level 3.5 or higher.
    • Hawaiian Quality Assurance System (HQAS) Interpreter Classification 3 certificate or higher.
    • National Interpreter Certification (e.g., Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID)).
    License Requirement
    • Valid license to drive in the State of Hawaii.
    Salary
    • Educational Interpreter I (SR‑14): $4,054.00 per month.
    • Educational Interpreter II (SR‑16): $4,388.00 per month.
