Bilingual/Bicultural School-Home Assistant

Salary Range: SR-11: $3,606.00 per month

• Serve as liaison to promote cooperation and understanding between parents, school, and project personnel.
• Serve as liaison to assist in solving students' educational and related problems.
• Disseminate project information.
• Explain school programs, policies, and procedures to parents; translate and relay parents' concerns to project and school staff.
• Seek community resources, maintain a file of these resources, and suggest various resources to assist parents with their problems.
• Recommend parents and community members with special skills as resource persons in the classrooms.
• Encourage parents to participate in school activities.
• Assist in organizing Parent Advisory Groups and encourage participation.
• Assist in planning and developing projects to increase parent participation in school-related activities.
• Plan for and/or conduct information and interest sessions for parents.
• Assist in translating information on various social and health programs.
• Participate in training programs and prepare activity reports.

Applicants must have had at least two (2) years of paid or volunteer work experience working with individuals and groups, and must possess the following abilities:

• Understand and explain various materials related to the program, project, or activity.
• Establish and maintain rapport with individuals and groups and encourage participation in program/project activities.
• Speak effectively with individuals and groups to elicit pertinent information.
• Plan and conduct group information sessions.
• Prepare activity reports.
• Recognize and identify basic individual human needs.

Applicants must have had at least one (1) year of experience that provided the following knowledge and skills:

• Knowledge of Kosraean/Marshallese culture, gained through participation in normal daily living activities in one or more of these communities.
• Ability to speak, read, write, and understand the Kosraean/Marshallese language, gained through participation in normal daily living activities in one or more of these communities.
• Ability to establish and maintain rapport with Kosraean/Marshallese communities.

This position requires possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license to drive in the State of Hawaii.

The advertised salary includes shortages and school year differentials, if applicable, and is based on full-time employment.
