Responsibilities
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
- 48 semester credits of baccalaureate level courses from an accredited institution recognized by the Hawaii Department of Education, including at least 3 credits of math and 3 credits of English.
- Or, successful completion of an Educational Interpreter training program with a specialization in Educational Interpreting (e.g., Associate of Science or Associate of Arts) from an accredited institution recognized by the Hawaii Department of Education.
Applicants must have at least 1 year of general experience and 3 years of specialized experience in interpreting/transliterating services for deaf or hard‑of‑hearing students, as outlined below.

- Successful completion of the Para Pro Assessment provided by the Education Testing Service (ETS) may substitute for the NCLB‑related basic education requirements.
- A bachelor’s degree completed through an ASL/Interpreting Program may substitute for the general and specialized experience requirements for Levels I and II.
- A master’s degree completed through an ASL/Interpreting Program may substitute for the general and specialized experience requirements for Levels I, II, and III.
Possession of the required number of years of experience alone is not sufficient; the applicant’s overall experience must demonstrate the scope and level of responsibility needed to perform the duties of the position.
Certification Requirements- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) level 4.0 or higher.
- Hawaii Quality Assurance System (HQAS) Interpreter Classification 4 certificate or higher.
- National Interpreter Certification (e.g., Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID)).
Applicants must possess a valid license to drive in the State of Hawaii.
SalaryThe advertised salary is based on full‑time employment and includes shortage and school‑year differentials, if applicable. For the Educational Interpreter III, SR‑18 position, the salary is $4,742.00 per month.
