Responsibilities

  • Use recognized interpreting and/or transliterating skills to facilitate communication between deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students and others including faculty, staff, administrators, and other students.
  • Serve as a liaison to promote positive and cooperative relationships within the school environment.
  • Follow the classroom schedule with deaf or hard‑of‑hearing students to interpret classroom activities, including lectures, conversations, films, special projects, and assemblies as dictated by the students’ Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and as assigned by the students’ teachers.
  • Facilitate communication on and off campus in emergency situations that include involvement with enforcement officers, child welfare services and other state and city agencies, incident investigations, medical emergencies, and last‑minute requests for immediate communication assistance.
  • Assist in various meetings with the specific communication needs of deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students.
  • Schedule, plan, and coordinate staff and contracted interpreters.
  • Participate in meetings, workshops and other training activities to keep abreast of current methods and trends in the field.
  • May teach basic sign language to students or staff.
  • Basic Education Requirements

    Graduation from high school or equivalent.

    • 48 semester credits of baccalaureate level courses from an accredited institution recognized by the Hawaii Department of Education, including at least 3 credits of math and 3 credits of English.
    • Or, successful completion of an Educational Interpreter training program with a specialization in Educational Interpreting (e.g., Associate of Science or Associate of Arts) from an accredited institution recognized by the Hawaii Department of Education.
    Experience Requirements

    Applicants must have at least 1 year of general experience and 3 years of specialized experience in interpreting/transliterating services for deaf or hard‑of‑hearing students, as outlined below.

    • General

      Experience:

      progressively responsible work experience in the application of interpreting/transliterating services to people who are deaf or hard‑of‑hearing.
    • Specialized

      Experience:

      progressively responsible work experience in the application of interpreting/transliterating services to people who are deaf or hard‑of‑hearing in an educational setting.
    Substitutions Allowed
    • Successful completion of the Para Pro Assessment provided by the Education Testing Service (ETS) may substitute for the NCLB‑related basic education requirements.
    • A bachelor’s degree completed through an ASL/Interpreting Program may substitute for the general and specialized experience requirements for Levels I and II.
    • A master’s degree completed through an ASL/Interpreting Program may substitute for the general and specialized experience requirements for Levels I, II, and III.
    Quality of Experience

    Possession of the required number of years of experience alone is not sufficient; the applicant’s overall experience must demonstrate the scope and level of responsibility needed to perform the duties of the position.

    Certification Requirements
    • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) level 4.0 or higher.
    • Hawaii Quality Assurance System (HQAS) Interpreter Classification 4 certificate or higher.
    • National Interpreter Certification (e.g., Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID)).
    License Requirement

    Applicants must possess a valid license to drive in the State of Hawaii.

    Salary

    The advertised salary is based on full‑time employment and includes shortage and school‑year differentials, if applicable. For the Educational Interpreter III, SR‑18 position, the salary is $4,742.00 per month.
