Position: LIBRARIAN VI - OAHU

This vacancy is with the Hawaii State Public Library System, Technical Services Section, located in Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library.

Salary: $6,535 to $7,952 per month (SR-26, Step D to I)

Note:

Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant's qualifications, and other relevant factors.

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising statewide cataloging and classification services, database maintenance, acquisition of selected library materials, and processing of library materials received by the Technical Services Section.

Applicants must possess demonstrated knowledge of cataloging and metadata standards including Anglo American Cataloging Rules, Dewey Decimal Classification, Resource Description and Access, and machine‑readable cataloging; automated library systems; and e‑resources management. Additionally, applicants must be able to plan, organize, and direct the implementation of new and modified cataloging and/or classification systems and procedures; make priority decisions; demonstrate competency in computer use, including internet and Microsoft Office products, or equivalent;

and learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs required to effectively and efficiently perform the assigned duties.

Qualifications
  • Education: A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited four‑year college or university.
  • Professional Librarian

    Experience:

    Four and one‑half years of progressively responsible professional experience in one or more major functional areas of librarianship (e.g., selection, acquisition, cataloging and classification, collection development and maintenance, reference and readers’ advisory services, or development and promotion of library services), which required the application of principles, practices, knowledge, theories, and tools of library science. At least one year must have been comparable to the Librarian V or two years comparable to the Librarian IV.
  • Librarian V Responsibilities: Planning and supervising the operation of a large public library; supervising and participating in the selection, development and maintenance of a collection of materials in one or more wide complex subject areas; developing, planning, coordinating and evaluating a major area of library services (e.g., children/young adult services) on a statewide basis.
  • Librarian IV Responsibilities: Professional leadership in charge of a library operation or as a specialist in an assigned field; use of experienced judgment in providing appropriate material and services to patrons; performing specialized activities within a complex and dynamic subject field; planning, coordinating and evaluating library services in a major functional area.
  • Selective Certification: One year of professional librarian experience must have involved at least one of the following: (1) Developing, implementing, and maintaining policies and procedures regarding cataloging and classification services; (2) Working with e‑resources that included maintaining program budgets and accounts, evaluating vendors, assisting with collection‑development statistics, or troubleshooting access issues for library users.
  • Supervisory

    Experience:

    One year of planning, organizing, scheduling, directing the work of others; assigning and reviewing work; providing advice on difficult problems; training and developing subordinates; evaluating performance.
