The University of Hawai'i Library seeks a dynamic Pacific and Southeast Asian Materials Cataloger to join our Cataloging Department. The Library has world-class collections related to Hawai'i, the Pacific Islands region, as well as China, Japan, Korea, Okinawa, the Philippines, Russia, South Asia, and Southeast Asia which support campus programs and researchers from across the globe. With a commitment to excellence, innovation, diverse ideas, global understanding, as well as western, non-western, and indigenous ways of knowing, we select and create, organize and protect, provide and teach access to resources that enable the creation of new knowledge in all its forms.
The Center for Pacific Islands Studies, Center for Philippine Studies, and Center for Southeast Asian Studies are major campus centers that promote the interdisciplinary study of Southeast Asia and the Pacific. Our Southeast Asian, Philippines, and Pacific Collections support students, faculty and international scholars.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Under the direction of the Cataloging Department chair, performs original and complex copy cataloging for library resources in English, French, Southeast Asian languages, Pacific languages, and other languages as necessary.
2. Catalogs library resources in a variety of subjects and formats using RDA, LC-PCC PS, PCC standard record guidelines, LC classification and subject headings, and MARC
21 formats.
3. Contributes name, series, and subject authority records through NACO/SACO cooperative programs. Participates in the BIBCO program.
4. Provides quality control of metadata, including bibliographic, authority, and holdings records.
5. Helps support the growing need for metadata management beyond traditional MARC records in order to facilitate access to digitized and born-digital material.
6. Participates in developing and reviewing departmental policies and procedures.
7. Creates ECIP records for new University of Hawai'i Press publications.
8. Maintains awareness of trends in cataloging, metadata, access, and discovery.
9. Librarians have faculty status and must meet requirements for tenure and promotion,
including professional development, research, and service.
Librarian II
Minimum Qualifications
1. A Master's degree in library or information science from a program accredited by the American
Library Association or from a college or university of recognized standing.
2. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
3. Cataloging coursework or demonstrated experience, including the application of controlled
vocabularies.
4. Good oral and written communication skills in English.
5. Demonstrated attention to detail.
Librarian III
Minimum Qualifications
1. A Master's degree in library or information science; in addition to the Master's degree, 24 post
- baccalaureate credits of academic study; and at least three years of appropriate experience.
2. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
3. Cataloging coursework or demonstrated experience, including the application of controlled
vocabularies.
4. Good oral and written communication skills in English.
5. Demonstrated attention to detail.
Librarian IV
Minimum Qualifications
1. A Master's degree in library or information science; a second Master's degree in a specialized
subject area; and seven years of appropriate experience or four years in the rank of Librarian III.
2. Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
3. Cataloging coursework or demonstrated experience, including the application of controlled
vocabularies.
4. Good oral and written communication skills in English.
5. Demonstrated attention to detail.
Desirable Qualifications
1. Experience in the application of current cataloging standards, including RDA, LC-PCC PS, and
MARC
21 formats.
2.
Experience with LC Classification.
3.
Experience with LCSH.
4. Experience as a NACO, SACO, and BIBCO contributor.
