MARYKNOLL SCHOOL JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Name: Middle Level Science Teacher

Department/Grade Level: Middle Level

Reports To: Middle School Dean

Effective Date: 08-01-2026

Classification: Exempt

General Statement of Duties: The teacher collaborates in the effective operation of a Catholic education program by supporting the goals and spirit of Catholic education in general and the school programs in particular; ensuring an effective instructional program; continuing in professional growth; encouraging student educational growth.

Essential Functions / Major Responsibilities: A teacher is expected to have competencies in the following major areas:

  • Community of Faith
    • Supports and implements the mission/philosophy of Catholic education and the school.
    • Gives evidence of lived Gospel values.
    • Participates in building faith community.
  • Instructional Process
    • Demonstrates evidence of prior planning and preparation.
    • Presents classes clearly and effectively.
    • Evaluates student progress effectively.
    • Adjusts curriculum and instruction to provide for individual differences.
    • Demonstrates ability to motivate students.
    • Maintains an atmosphere conducive to learning in both the physical environment and the learning atmosphere.
    • Knows and uses technology appropriately in and during instruction.
  • Interpersonal Relationships
    • Works cooperatively with administration.
    • Works positively with colleagues, support staff, and parish staff.
    • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations with students.
    • Maintains positive interpersonal relations with parents.
  • Professional Responsibilities
    • Develop and deliver rich, student-centered learning experiences around science, working from existing curricular frameworks, texts, and assessments.
    • Provide in‑school tutoring and on‑campus supervision duties during the school day.
    • Willingness to participate in some aspect of the school's extracurricular life, contributing to the school culture and community outside and beyond teaching.
    • Exhibit a love of science in all its forms and strongly believe that all students can, and should, enjoy a hands‑on college‑preparatory curriculum which includes project‑based instruction.
    • Thorough experience with the Next Generation Science Standards and knowledge of effective differentiation and customization practices to support teaching students from diverse backgrounds, including learning differences.
    • Show interest in continuing professional development in science education.
    • Enjoy working with students and colleagues in collaborative settings.
  • Professional Growth
    • Keeps abreast of developments in curriculum and methodology.
    • Interacts with colleagues to further professional growth.
    • Takes advantage of opportunities for professional improvement.
    • Completes necessary work toward obtaining and/or maintaining a valid teaching license.

Minimum Qualifications: B.Ed or equivalent. Preferred qualification will be to demonstrate success in teaching science to students in grades 6-8, with a minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience in public, charter, parochial, or independent schools.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, talk, reach, sit, hear, handle, and perform repetitive motions of the hands/wrists. Teachers must be able to stand and/or sit for extended periods. May need to climb stairs and lift, carry, push and/or pull items up to 50 pounds. Must be able to respond effectively to, and lead the class in emergency situations.

Working Environment: Work is usually performed in a classroom setting within the time frame established by the Middle Level Dean. Employee is occasionally required to attend evening meetings and may oversee field trips and other special events.

Supervision: Exercises working supervision over students, educational assistants and volunteers, as necessary.
