Job Nature: Full‑time, permanent, 9‑month, tenure‑track; appointments start August 1, 2026 (subject to funding).
Position: Assistant Professor (F3) or Associate Professor (F4) – Research faculty
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Position DescriptionThe School of Life Sciences (SoLS) seeks a candidate to investigate how marine organisms, populations, or communities respond to environmental change. The research should integrate organismal biology with ecology, spanning multiple scales, and focus on Hawaiian species when possible. Successful applicants will have expertise in any area of marine biology (physiological, ecological, evolutionary, or others) and a track record of publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
AssistantProfessor Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and sustain an innovative, externally funded research program.
- Mentor and advise graduate and undergraduate students.
- Provide high‑quality teaching in Marine Biology B.S. and B.A. programs.
- Develop and teach graduate courses that support School degrees.
- Serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
- Render service to the professional and local/regional community relevant to the academic specialty.
- In addition to Assistant Professor duties, provide leadership at the university and national levels.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field.
- Research experience in marine biology or a related field.
- Excellence and creativity in research as shown by peer‑reviewed publications.
- Ability to teach and mentor students in core Marine Biology courses (e.g., algal diversity, invertebrate biology, fish biology, marine microbiology, marine ecology and evolution, advanced capstone).
- Commitment to the principles of the School of Life Sciences (integrity, excellence in instruction and research).
- Professionalism in communication and collaboration.
Minimum Qualifications
- All Assistant Professor qualifications.
- Four years in the Assistant Professor rank.
- Documented participation in departmental, university, or professional organization scholarly affairs.
- Clear recognition among peers at local or regional levels.
- Postdoctoral research experience.
- External research funding.
- Excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate students.
- Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Vision for research that leverages Hawai‘i’s location, resources, and partners.
- Connection to global change issues.
- All Assistant Professor desirable qualifications.
- Departmental leadership experience.
- Strong teaching evaluations.
- Peer‑reviewed publications in major journals related to the field.
