About the Role

Responsible for planning and implementing a program to teach young children. Ensures the development and safety of the children in accordance with relevant Federal, State and County policies and regulations.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provides a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate and use both in learning activities and in imaginative play.
  • Establishes and enforces rules for behavior, and procedures for maintaining order.
  • Organizes and leads activities designed to promote physical, mental and social development, such as games, arts and crafts, music, storytelling, and field trips.
  • Identifies children showing signs of emotional, development, or health-related problems, and discusses them with supervisors, parents or guardians, and child development specialists.
  • Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
  • Meets with parents and guardians to discuss their children's progress and needs, determine their priorities for their children, and suggests ways that they can promote learning and development.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Educational Requirements
  • BA Degree in Child Development or Early Childhood Education including core courses (Child/Home Growth and Development;
    Child, Family and Community; Program/Curriculum or related field, requiring transcripts from an accredited college or university).
  • OR A valid Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) with a minimum of one (1) year work experience in an Early Childhood classroom.
  • OR Education and experience that meets the Career Access and Navigation of Early Childhood System (CANOES) Registry qualifications for Group Child Care Center Teacher.
Experience Requirements

Knowledge in the following areas:

  • Child development and early education theories and practices.
  • Safe and appropriate activities for children.
  • Relevant legislation, policies, and procedures to ensure that children are supervised and safe at all times.
Skills Required
  • Effective verbal and listening communication skills.
  • Stress management and time management skills.
  • Team building, analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Must be presently or willing to register by fingerprinting with the Department of Human Services.
  • Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification and First Aid certification.
  • Clean criminal background/record check.
Communication and Contacts
  • Requires contacts both inside and outside at all organizational levels.
  • Requires considerable tact, discretion and persuasion to obtain results.
  • May present new methods, programs, and controversial issues.
