Responsible for planning and implementing a program to teach young children. Ensures the development and safety of the children in accordance with relevant Federal, State and County policies and regulations.
Essential Job Functions- Provides a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate and use both in learning activities and in imaginative play.
- Establishes and enforces rules for behavior, and procedures for maintaining order.
- Organizes and leads activities designed to promote physical, mental and social development, such as games, arts and crafts, music, storytelling, and field trips.
- Identifies children showing signs of emotional, development, or health-related problems, and discusses them with supervisors, parents or guardians, and child development specialists.
- Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
- Meets with parents and guardians to discuss their children's progress and needs, determine their priorities for their children, and suggests ways that they can promote learning and development.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- BA Degree in Child Development or Early Childhood Education including core courses (Child/Home Growth and Development;
Child, Family and Community; Program/Curriculum or related field, requiring transcripts from an accredited college or university). - OR A valid Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) with a minimum of one (1) year work experience in an Early Childhood classroom.
- OR Education and experience that meets the Career Access and Navigation of Early Childhood System (CANOES) Registry qualifications for Group Child Care Center Teacher.
Knowledge in the following areas:
- Child development and early education theories and practices.
- Safe and appropriate activities for children.
- Relevant legislation, policies, and procedures to ensure that children are supervised and safe at all times.
- Effective verbal and listening communication skills.
- Stress management and time management skills.
- Team building, analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Must be presently or willing to register by fingerprinting with the Department of Human Services.
- Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification and First Aid certification.
- Clean criminal background/record check.
- Requires contacts both inside and outside at all organizational levels.
- Requires considerable tact, discretion and persuasion to obtain results.
- May present new methods, programs, and controversial issues.
