Hanahau‘oli School seeks an experienced teacher‑librarian and information literacy specialist, responsible for the supervision of the school library and facilitation and instruction of the information literacy program at Hanahau’oli School. The full‑time specialist teacher position reports to and is evaluated by the Director of Faculty & Curriculum, Upper Elementary.

The candidate will be expected to plan and implement a developmentally appropriate library program designed to promote social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and self‑efficacy growth in children. In addition, candidates are expected to communicate in a professional manner with Hanahau‘oli constituents, demonstrate commitment to ongoing learning and professional development, support the school in its mission and beliefs, and contribute to the joyful work of the school community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Curriculum & Instruction:
    Design and implement a joyful, challenging, and age‑appropriate library curriculum that responds to children's curiosities and in‑the‑moment needs. Differentiate instruction to support various learning styles, individual strengths, and the philosophy of growth‑over‑time. Design and teach an information and media literacy program, including digital citizenship, grounding the learning in developing critical thinking skills and understanding what it means to be a participant in a democracy.

    Design and implement integrated, thematic units of study, with a basis in essential information literacy skills.
  • Library Management:
    Ensure the library is a safe, welcoming, and accessible place for children and adults, supporting a culture of literacy at Hanahau‘oli. Manage and organize the library space, including maintaining a diverse and age‑appropriate collection, shelving, book circulation, and handling book selection, ordering, and purchasing. Coordinate special library initiatives, such as scheduling and preparing Birthday books.
  • Collaboration & Leadership:
    Partner effectively with faculty to integrate library services into classroom curriculum and differentiated instruction. Provide support and guidance on best practices for library science, information and media literacy, and digital citizenship for faculty and staff. Supervise the efforts of student teachers, parent volunteers, and other assistants. Participate in school‑wide committee work to enhance the Hanahau’oli educational program and community. Demonstrate professionalism through reliability, attention to detail, anticipating needs, punctuality, and ensuring appropriate confidentiality;

    through active, positive participation in meetings and staff development opportunities; and, by actively engaging in seeking constructive solutions to problems when they arise.
  • Community Engagement:
    Foster an open environment by communicating regularly with parents and teachers about the library and library program. Design and implement parent enrichment experiences.
  • Student Support & Safety:
    Ensure a safe, warm, and positive learning environment by creating a welcoming and hazard‑free library, maintaining a robust and diverse library collection, observing and supporting children, anticipating needs, and upholding school expectations. Fulfills recess, lunch, car duties, etc. as assigned.
  • Professional Growth:
    Be a "Teacher Scientist" - a reflective practitioner who uses observations and feedback to evaluate practice and set goals. Seek opportunities for continued professional growth and share learning with the wider community.
Qualifications
  • Education:

    A Bachelor’s degree or higher in education, library science, or a related field is required, with a Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience:

    At least 5 years of experience teaching children is expected.
  • Educational Philosophy:
    Must demonstrate a strong orientation toward progressive teaching methods, continuous progress, and a solid understanding of child development theory.
